Don't let a coven impregnate you. Glad I read this. Though I don't think the horror quite holds up (I didn't find it as scary), I think that's because this story acts as a basis for similar horror fare. A delight.
I had been eyeing this book since I saw it at my local bookstore earlier this year, having picked it up and read the blurb on multiple occasions, thinking it was a memoir rather than a work of fiction. That said, I was absolutely delighted when I saw it at the local library.
I read this in about two sittings. For a book that quite clearly deals with depression, I did not feel depressed (and considering I have clinical depression, I often feel depressed). At times, Moshfegh's writing is funny and at times harrowing, sad, and dismal. The narrator is difficult to like (for her privilege), but also difficult to dislike as she has faced so much trauma in her life.
I think it only took me 4-5 hours to read this, so I would recommend it if you have the time.

This wasn't bad, but definitely not a favorite. Enjoyed listening to it while working though, kind of a mindless beach read about the type of privileged people I have no idea how to handle.
Read this book ahead of listening to the Teen Creeps episode about it, and I'm glad I did. I felt absolutely enraptured by the story. White expertly crafts the type of tale I wish Elizabeth would have gotten had she not been the side character in this story.
WOW! Rachel Held Evans's memoir about the church really shook me. This book really made me reckon with my own spirituality and led me to find my own path to wholeness. Even though I'm not sure I completely buy into all Christian doctrine (especially American Christian doctrine), I do believe there is something bigger than myself out there and this book gave me the confidence to seek out a faith community again.
This book was truly amazing. I really enjoyed reading it. Thanks for the rec Megan and Hailey!
Brilliant meditation on our connectedness to the Earth and the spirituality that comes from that.
I'm really glad I picked this book up while at my local bookstore.
Though the writing is fairly academic, the author does such a great job of rounding out all of this research and making it palatable for a general audience. I enjoyed learning more about this town two hours from where I'm living.
Definitely would recommend for anyone interested in learning about sex work or the economies of mining towns. I find myself drawn to books about mining communities while living in the West and think books like Selling Sex in the Silver Valley allow me to have a better understanding of the history of this place.

Such a compelling read. I started reading it last night, anticipating that I'd only get through thirty pages or so, and the next the I know, I've finished it.
Highly recommend. Levin has such skill when it comes to building suspense and unease.
