Fledgling

Octavia E. Butler

DID NOT FINISH

I loved Kindred, so I expected to love this book too. unfortunately, this just wasn't it for me. octavia butler's writing style and incredible imagination were the only things that kept me reading. I loved her conceptualization of vampires, family, and justice, but the book did drag. I also couldn't get past the fact that the main character is a child. every scene in my head I was yelling "she's in a ten year old's body!!" I don't really understand why that choice was made and honestly, it made a lot of the scenes make me sick. I will definitely give butler's other books a try but this one was a miss.

this one was more of a short story collection than an actual narrative. it didn't take away from the reading experience for me, but I think people might be disoriented by that. otherwise, I really enjoyed this book. it's truly intersectional and I wish more people would read it.

3.5. this book had a lot of heart. I liked the characters and I liked reading a book from the POV of a character experiencing homelessness. I did find myself cringing a little bit at how naive Harbour was and how predictable the plot was. I still liked this book, though. It was well written and hard to put down. thanks to dundurn press and netgalley for the arc.

Don’t believe booktube hype. I’m always disappointed.

*** reread january 2025: potentially THE most underrated magical realism book of all time. why is everyone not talking about this I knew what was coming and am once again in tears

this book was fantastic. the writing was so beautiful and intricate. the alternating point of view was a little confusing for me but the way it helped to flesh out the characters was so worth it. the love story between cocoa and george was one of the best written relationships I have ever read and I definitely won’t forget it. once you start reading and get into willow springs, you don’t want to leave.
