this gave me everything I wanted. from an interview with the author, I found out that she was originally going to make a book out of edgar allen poe's annabelle lee. that made complete sense to me. this book is such a vibe.

normally, I hate dual POVs but in this case it worked so well. getting to see the childhood of the main character was so touching and beautifully done. and, of course, chambers grappled with the question of AI sentience in her own uniquely engaging way. I'm mad that there's only one book left in the series.

for me, "especially heinous" was by far the best story and honestly one of the most engrossing reading experiences I've had this year. "the husband stitch" was a very close second and perfect retelling of my favorite childhood scary story. the rest of the stories were all really fantastic, but none of rest of them lived up to these two. that being said, this is still 100% a 5 star read for me.
