I feel like the best way to describe how I feel about this book is that I enjoyed what it was, but I still wish it was more. It’s YA, it’s romantasy, neither of which I generally enjoy reading (not anymore at least, in YA’s case), but I did really enjoy this one. I thought it was cute how Roman kind of seemed to fall in love with Iris instantly, while she still thought he was a prick nearly until the moment they got married. (In general I think I liked Roman slightly more than Iris, but I definitely did like both protagonists.)

I wish the book had gone more deeply into aspects outside the relationship between the two, but that is kind of to be expected with this genre. I would have liked to have known more about the side characters like Attie and Marisol. All in all an enjoyable read, there wasn’t really anything I disliked but it did leave me wanting a lot more with some aspects.

Cool additional context for the show, nothing all that new but I loved Peg and Peggy’s story!

This gay man really writes women like he's straight. that's not a compliment

on the other hand it felt like Maric and Loghain should’ve kissed lol

Hoping to come back to this at some point in the future... let's just say I tried to read it after finishing a book with GREAT female characters, and the difference between that and this one was too jarring. Isn't sexual assault just sooooo funny :eyeroll:

Fun, quick read! The author clearly knows a lot about wine, which I thought was cool. I didn’t feel too strongly about the central romance; it was kind of just… there. Don’t really get what drew them to each other.

I’ve absolutely loved everything I’ve read by T. Kingfisher (which admittedly isn’t a lot yet), and this one is no exception. I just couldn’t put it down and finished it in under 24 hours! I can’t pinpoint exactly what it is, but there’s something in her writing that just drags me in in a way few authors do.

I adored Hester’s perspective — and Cordelia’s, but especially Hester’s! Between this book and Nettle & Bone, I like how Kingfisher writes more mature protagonists (only ~30s in Nettle & Bone if I remember correctly, but that’s still older than many fantasy books).

Incredibly fun to read as someone with a background in atmospheric/oceanic science. Lots of scientific detail, some of which is absolutely disproven now… such as how continents form, or what Antarctica looks like under all that ice.

Note for r/Fantasy Book Bingo 2024, I’m using this as a substitution square in place of Self/Indie Published. This does not fit that prompt lol
