So here's the deal: for the first third of the book, I just couldn't get into it. Couldn't get past Zelda's way of talking, couldn't get past the overwhelming Viking presence. But I kept going because I'm not a quitter and... let's just say the end of the book had me nearly in tears.

Do yourself a favor and pick up this book. Power through until you get used to Zelda and Vikings and give yourself some perspective.

Wow. Just wow. Historical fiction, painstakingly researched. Stories, beautifully written and intertwined. And a side of history I never knew existed. Fantastic job, Ruta. Truly.

Overall it was not a bad book at all. I enjoyed the writing style and I think it handled tough topics well. However, I think the build-up to the "secret" was maybe a bit drawn out for me (but that's because I'm impatient more than anything) and I could NOT stand Jess, wow. I'm all for characters with flaws but oh my word. Even with that, I think Hannah is a beautiful writer and I think this book was well-written, moving, and overall a good book to read.

Read this one with the lights on. And maybe when the sun is out. And never doubt the power of grief or imagination.

I wasn't sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't that. Turns out I loved it and was so imbedded in the petty drama that I read the entire thing in a day. Oops.

The perfect mixture of science and drama, this book had me hooked from page 1.
