This short story invites the reader into a tale of a bounty hunter in a world where lurking shades will consume you if you start a fire, run, or draw blood. These restrictions pose a significant challenge for our hero, a brave woman who turns to bounty hunting to provide for her family. A well told story in an interesting setting, but left me wishing it weren't a short story. This is probably because the short story medium still doesn't resonate with me as well as longer form stories, but I think this story really deserved to be longer in a way that some don't. I would like a whole trilogy in this setting please.
I completely loved this book and I cannot wait for more! Unending action, insightful historical adaptation, fantastic protagonist and supporting characters. Love! And what perfect timing because I saw Justina Ireland at the National Book Festival today after not realizing she would be there and she was so awesome.
Hamid's prose is so beautiful, and I was entranced by this story.
This book was such an excellent experience to read in a day. I love friendship stories, and these characters are definitely going to stay with me. I want to say more but I'm sleepy, but just loved.
I really enjoyed this short story collection. Patel writes about an unpredictable variety of characters, most of whom are struggling with something or themselves, and I loved that.
I enjoyed Jacqueline Woodson's writing and the opportunity to return to these characters, although this story kept my attention somewhat less easily than If You Come Softly
R. O. Kwon's writing is stunning, and this story was fascinating and so meaningful to me. Might try to write more later... C.w. for sexual violence.
Day's self deprecating humor comes across as kind of mean as she describes her childhood, but by the chapters about acting after college and especially as she delves into creating The Guild I started to really get into this book, and there are so many laugh out loud funny stories. Day is very anxious and insecure in a way that I super relate to, and she shares herself very openly with the reader. One thing that bothered me was in some language choices, especially her use of the word vagina when referring to women's experiences, which just gives me a cringe reaction in the way it excludes trans women, who generally face more severe hostility for existing in male dominated spaces. I'm not sure if Day would choose different language if she were writing this book today. Her chapter about how much interacting with fans has meant to her was the highlight of the book for me, and almost made me cry. Overall, despite a few issues I kinda loved this book, and I definitely feel inspired to be creative and put things I make out there!
This is such a powerful book, I highly recommend it. The blurb-ers were not exaggerating when they used words like brutal and raw, or when calling it a masterpiece. It's a hard one but I really think everyone should read this book. I'm going to be thinking and talking about this one for a long time.
Wow. Fast paced and exciting in a completely different way than Lexicon, Syrup was much better than I expected. It was hilarious and absurd at times, and so incredibly heart-wrenching as each new twist in the plot unfolded. Scat and 6 are brilliantly realized characters and their story is well worth reading.
