A moment in history crystalized through the eyes of only a few characters. Heartbreaking and moving.
This book gracefully tackles tough issues of sexuality, family expectations, infidelity, race and racism. I expected more cutesy love story and got more messy and difficult stuff, but I wasn't disappointed.
Loved this book. Fast plot and great characters.
This book was surprisingly suspenseful, I don't know how Kwan managed it. I wasn't expecting the story to incorporate so many different family members' story lines, but I was glad that it did when I became invested in their arcs, especially Astrid's. I loved reading this book, and only wish it had a little more resolution at the end, although I look forward to picking up the sequel.
Highly recommend. This is a beautifully crafted memoir, which starts early in Khan-Cullors' life and works its way through the founding of the Black Lives Matter movement and beyond. The writing is always precisely correct and insightful, endlessly heartbreaking but never hopeless, always fighting. I completely admire these women, and I am challenged and inspired by this story.
A carefully constructed history, filled with so many small moments of heartbreak.
Really well told and powerful, uplifting at times even as it dealt with difficult issues.
I really enjoyed this graphic memoir, but found the jumps between past and present sometimes hard to follow. I loved Georges' art style and honesty, her emotions resonated throughout her story.
I found this book a bit more scattered than Fresh Off the Boat, and at first it was a challenge to see how the chapters and pieces of the story were fitting together. The questions that Huang grapples with here were well explored and of course the food all sounded amazing.
This cookbook is a complete delight. The photography is stunning, the recipes are all mouth watering, and Kristen Kish's voice is ever present. She connects each dish to it's inspiration or to why she gets excited to eat it, filling the pages with food and stories - the best things in the world.
