HMM. After loving The Wicked and the Divine, I was excited to check out Gillen and McKelvie's earlier work. Phonogram promised an interesting premise but delivered a lot of confusion for me. I felt it was hard to follow, and not just because I didn't get all the band references. Also, the protagonist was pretty lame. Overall I enjoyed the story anyway, it did come together by the end in such a way as to make almost complete sense.
The Brimper letters doubled my enjoyment of this issue, and made me super glad I have started reading individual issues, even though issues always feel too short. I love Fraction's treatment of people's quirks and I'm excited to get back to my favorite sex criminals and their crazy story, and especially to meet all the new members of their growing weird club.
While a satisfying conclusion to this story, I was hoping for more I think. It felt rushed in a way stories told in the graphic medium often do I think. The tendency is for everything to either take place in a very short amount of time, or time is glossed over very quickly, or both. In this story the passages of great lengths of time were more successful than the short ones. Anyway, overall the Alex and Ada story is suspenseful and heartwarming but just misses on perfect timing in my opinion.
The wildly varying aliens of Kaptara are delightful, reminding me of Saga while feeling entirely original. I find the art style less compelling, and the story is obviously much lighter, but the character development is real.
Kaptara is an exciting page turner and also quite funny. The pacing feels really on point and I'm immediately invested in our protagonist.
Everything intensifies. In spite of the persistent confusion, I'm really hooked by this story and hoping for some answers.
While still employing dreams and setting scenes in characters' minds, this volume wraps the Scott Pilgrim story up with sufficient clarity. I think the comic tells a more coherent and much larger story than the movie was able to. And it's a lot more than just fight scenes, it's several intertwined characters figuring out how to relate to others, have successful romantic relationships, and just grow up and take care of themselves.
I like this volume because for Scott and Ramona's relationship to work requires them to face his baggage as much as hers.
Hoping everything resolves by the end! We've focused less and less on Ramona's exes and more on lots of interpersonal dynamics and it's really good. I love Kim. But, there are still a lot of unanswered questions!
Fun, still funny, and the most non-evil ex centered one yet? A lot happened in this volume, and I really enjoy the characters more and more. Every page is a giggle.
