Unforgettable story indeed. After I finished Shuggie Bain, I had to sit with it awhile before writing a review. This story was so powerful and raw, and transported you right into Scotland, the neighbourhoods, and all of the heart-tugging angst. What a childhood Shuggie had to endure...alcoholism, poverty, abuse, abandonment. Douglas Stuart deserves all of the awards this year for this remarkable novel.

A suspenseful puzzle of a story...the twists and turns had me intrigued. 3.5 stars so I rounded up to 4.

The story was told through the most wonderful writing, exposing the reader to rich emotions through the deep exploration of relationships, centred around the main character Annie. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

“The weirdest thing about a mind is that you can have the most intense things going on in there but no one else can see them.”
A highlight of 2020 was reading Matt Haig. The Midnight Library was pure magic, and I am now sending up 5 beautiful stars for Reasons To Stay Alive.
“Don’t worry about the time you lose to despair. The time you will have afterwards has just doubled its value.”

Wonderful story! Two unlikely women on an epic adventure who overcome each other’s differences and dislike, ultimately by unwavering acceptance to form a beautiful friendship. The most lovely writing...mystery, suspense, and the will to survive.

Another winner from Elizabeth Gilbert. So so good
