The best way I can describe this book is "abstract Western." Eli and Charlie Sisters are killers-for-hire in Oregon during the gold rush and this book follows them as they travel to California to kill a man and have some seriously bizarre and hilarious adventures on the way.
A book full of stories that reinforced my decision to never have children ^_^
Slowly but surely this book gave me chills.
I like that it recapped Avalon High so I didn't have to re-read it, but nothing happens this whole volume. The art was cute and the cliffhanger was aggravating.
The art is weird and the story is less interesting from Kieren's perspective, but I enjoyed seeing his point of view anyway. His friends were fun. Loved his mom.
I loved the story itself and the watercolor portions of the art. Ghost bride stories are fascinating. The characters were so tangible and I loved the way real life mixed with superstition and adventure.
But dear God, the art style used on the people was TERRIBLE. Laughably, heartbreakingly, ruinously bad.
If you can get past that, it's worth the read.

This is a strange book to try and classify. It is half young adult (the perspective of Amelia) and half adult (the perspective of her mother). It is a thriller in that there are tons of red herrings and suspects and tension, but it is also a realistic fiction in that it is a teenager struggling to fit in and a mother struggling to come to terms with her daughter growing up. It is definitely unique and well-crafted.
I picked up this book despite all the bad reviews about how wildly inaccurate and poorly researched it was (I don't know anything about security and speed limits at JSC, but even I know that lassi is not an "unpronounceable yogurt drink").
Nevertheless, I gave up on it because its so damned boring. Mezrich blew his load on the first chapter that describes the heist itself, and then backtracks to Thad's Mormon upbringing and need to show off among his fellow interns and none of it is even the slightest bit entertaining.
