This is so cute, I couldn’t put it down

I really enjoyed the first two-thirds of this although there was a lot to take in and I definitely needed breaks in between perspectives. I feel like so much more could’ve been done with the ending. I understand that Kraus was finishing an unfinished manuscript but it just seemed like the ending was rushed and the threads weren’t connected the way Romero may have intended them to. Overall the story was compelling, the pied piper in a Louisiana bayou is such an interesting and new twist on the pied piper story while also incorporating the atmosphere of Louisiana. I just wish there was more.

I feel very meh about this. It was interesting that vampires were treated as a marginalized group but at the same time it felt very over done. The twists were fine but I didn’t particularly care when the killer was revealed nor the reveal at the end. It was well written, I just didn’t have interest

I’ve never seen a clearer agenda in a book than this. Of course the atheist, pro science, pro consent parents

I’m so shocked. But also of course the liberal, no red meat eating parents were going to teach their kid about “anal, cunnilingus, and gender theory” be so fucking for real. This was a Fox News level millennial couple and the message only would’ve been clearer if they made it a same sex couple.

I wasn’t super enthralled by this. The writing style wasn’t for me though I did appreciate that the main character was an elderly person, since not many books have an elderly person as anything other than a supporting character. Overlll this felt lackluster to me

This was such an incredible debut book. The writing style drew me in and kept my attention the whole time. The enemies to lovers was well done, the characters were truly enemies and still by the end they hadn’t completely given their hearts to each other. The motives of the characters were explored and questioned and I loved the morality questions posed to and by the actions of the characters. I really enjoyed the plot twists and the development of the storyline, it wasn’t a straightforward plot which I loved. I’m looking forward to the sequel and what Girma puts out next

I had to force myself to finish. I felt so bored and it felt like nothing really happened until the last 30 pages or so. I enjoyed being in Eleanor’s mind and I understand her feeling of not having a place to fit in, unfortunately that alone wasn’t enough for me to enjoy the book

While beautifully written, I don’t think the story moved  me the same way others did. I enjoyed the gothic atmosphere and ghost companions as well ass the format of the main character telling her story interspersed with doctors notes regarding her mental state, but I think the story was just not compelling to me.

I would say that this is definitely miscategorized as a horror, however the writing was beautiful. Cañas did not fall into the second book trap. It has the same atmosphere as The Hacienda and I love how she took a historical romance and wove in the supernatural while ending the book on a satisfying note

That was a ride. I think I was about halfway through when I realized it wasn’t actually a horror novel but something else entirely. I will say the beginning was very slow but once I got into the the last third or so, I couldn’t put the book down.
