I love Thara's books, but Maia's book is like a warm hug to me. What happens if an overlooked, half-blood fourth son becomes Emperor, and he is not only clever but also so so kind? And he receives kindness in return?
Maia is 18 and very out of his depth, but also very intelligent. Csevet is frighteningly competent. Csevet, Beshelar, Cala and Csetiro are all amazing, and I love them, and I think Maia should smooch all of them. Vedero, Idra and his sisters, and Kiru are also amazing. Just. So many good characters. So much kindness in this horrible political world.
I would love to have another Maia book, preferably one where he gets to meet his pirate aunt.

This was nice, but somehow felt shorter and more incomplete than the first.

I love these two, and I'm glad they got to get their happy ending. They're both messed up, but they're working on it.
