Read for my Horror Book club
But it's not really horror? Not supernaturally at least. It's got Shining-vibes but because the setting is a hotel in the mountains during a snowstorm. Said hotel used to be a...you'll never guess this... a sanatorium for people with TB in the early 1900s. So this book's got great setting and a spooky, isolated atmosphere going for it.

I think my biggest problem were the characters. The main character, Elin, I understand she's going through Some Shit. Something happened to her younger brother when she and her older brother were 8-ish. Something happened at her work to further stress her out. But boy does she seem like an absolute mess! How did this woman become a part of the police force in the first place?? She's so dainty and fragile. That's my biggest question.

And then men in this book. Ugh. Is there any good man in this book? They all suck. They're all demoralizing, sexist, womanizers. Even Elin's boyfriend, Will, seems to waver between being a charming, supportive partner and a complete asshole that sells Elin out and says things to people that leaves her very vulnerable.

And Elin's brother, Isaac? What a slimy, psychologically abusive piece of shit he is. His character just reminded me so much of a terrible ex I had that there's no redeeming him in my eyes. He's trash.

I understand we're reading this through Elin's POV, so we aren't getting the whole story, but there were just so many weird plot holes and I could not suspend my disbelief enough to accept much of what was happening.

Plus I wanted ghosts :(

Absolutely adorable! This series continues to be cute and sweet. It does get a little sad with some bullying and we learn about the rough time Charlie had when he was outed at school which lead to some unhealthy habits. Are these habits popping up again? All I know is that Nick is a wonderful boyfriend and I have no doubt he will be there for Charlie!

A class trip to Paris and so many opportunities to create the cliche "There was only ONE BED" plot line. Which it does. But not with who you would think :P
Anyway, continues to be adorable, I just worry about Charlie, but I know Nick is there for him <3

3.5 stars. An easy read and a great ghost read for reluctant readers that want a good "ghost hunting" or "haunting" book to read. Plus, it's the first in a series! Plus, it's by V.E. Schwab who is an excellent author (I didn't even know she wrote juv books)! I'm not on a cliffhanger or into the book enough to move directly onto book 2, but hopefully I'll get to it in my future!

Slice of life manga that is ADORABLE! I think I'm going to have to just buy this for myself since I'm currently reading the library's copy.

The sweet: Ichinoi seems to just take everything in stride and doesn't judge.
The sad: She is getting older and knows that she doesn't have many years left, and when she did the math on whether or not she would live long enough to read the end of a BL series I got a little teary-eyed T-T

Cute, simple, and silly.

Continues to be the best manga I've read in years! <3

What a strange little comic! I was intrigued to read this because on reddit someone was like: "What's that one book, I think it was for kids, but it had some really graphic gore and violence in it?" and when the answer was a title like Little Vampire Does Kung Fu I had to see if my library system had it (they do)!
It's a very silly comic, the words are small and the pictures and panels tightly packed in, and I'm pretty sure boys aged 9 and up would love it!

The gore... not too explicit and gorey but a kid would get a kick out of it.

I think my biggest complaint is that the title is misleading. Little Vampire DOESN'T know kung fu! And it's the little boy Michael who needs to learn it! Little vampire doesn't even learn kung fu!
