The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse
2.0

Read for my Horror Book club
But it's not really horror? Not supernaturally at least. It's got Shining-vibes but because the setting is a hotel in the mountains during a snowstorm. Said hotel used to be a...you'll never guess this... a sanatorium for people with TB in the early 1900s. So this book's got great setting and a spooky, isolated atmosphere going for it.

I think my biggest problem were the characters. The main character, Elin, I understand she's going through Some Shit. Something happened to her younger brother when she and her older brother were 8-ish. Something happened at her work to further stress her out. But boy does she seem like an absolute mess! How did this woman become a part of the police force in the first place?? She's so dainty and fragile. That's my biggest question.

And then men in this book. Ugh. Is there any good man in this book? They all suck. They're all demoralizing, sexist, womanizers. Even Elin's boyfriend, Will, seems to waver between being a charming, supportive partner and a complete asshole that sells Elin out and says things to people that leaves her very vulnerable.

And Elin's brother, Isaac? What a slimy, psychologically abusive piece of shit he is. His character just reminded me so much of a terrible ex I had that there's no redeeming him in my eyes. He's trash.

I understand we're reading this through Elin's POV, so we aren't getting the whole story, but there were just so many weird plot holes and I could not suspend my disbelief enough to accept much of what was happening.

Plus I wanted ghosts :(
