Really liked the format and structure. Lots of great little nuggets in each chapter, and a broader unified theme. This would make a great book study for a small group.
I really enjoyed the concepts here, but I found the way things were phrased kinda off-putting. The language is very... over the top? Not sure how to articulate my thoughts on this. Definitely an important read for personal development.
First of all, beware of the onion-cutting ninjas while reading this book. This is a story of a family in the aftermath of a school shooting, from the perspective of their six-year-old son, a survivor. The elder son is one of the shooting victims. Zach, the protagonist is sweet and adorable and complex, a great reminder that children too are capable of complex emotions. The story that Navin tells is full of hurt and anger and hope and sadness and it's so SO important. I found it interesting to see the elements that she chose to address and those she chose to omit, and the limited view of a young child makes that work.
A simple, quick book about the importance of singing in the modern church. I really liked how they put things in both a scriptural and cultural (in this case, Western) context, while also looking at the broader implications in the global Church. Music is important to worship, and the Gettys take a few moments here to help us understand (or be able to articulate why). This comes with examples from both scripture and hymns, as well as discussion questions, which makes it a good book to use for a book study on music/singing/worship.
