Only Child by Rhiannon Navin
5.0

First of all, beware of the onion-cutting ninjas while reading this book. This is a story of a family in the aftermath of a school shooting, from the perspective of their six-year-old son, a survivor. The elder son is one of the shooting victims. Zach, the protagonist is sweet and adorable and complex, a great reminder that children too are capable of complex emotions. The story that Navin tells is full of hurt and anger and hope and sadness and it's so SO important. I found it interesting to see the elements that she chose to address and those she chose to omit, and the limited view of a young child makes that work.
