I liked this a lot more the second time around! This is best read after a little break from the Trilogy lest you unfairly compare to Golden Son and Morning Star like I did the first time.

I am even more excited to see what Pierce Brown does with Dark Age now! This is such an amazing series and I will continue to force - I mean persuade everyone I know to read it.

What a cliffhanger!

3.5 Stars

Winter by Winter was definitely reminiscent of Sky in the Deep, which is a huge compliment in my book, and could have been a 4-4.5 star read had it been twice as long. But for only being 120 pages, Jordan Stratford does a decent job of getting the reader invested in Ladda. I would definitely read a sequel or companion book and this made for an enjoyable one sitting read.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

I ended up putting this book down for 2 weeks after reading the first chapter but once I came back to it and got a little farther in, I was intrigued. The magic in the world was interesting. There are 3 types of people:
Solitaires: (muggles I suppose)
Traders: People able to trade into an animal form while retaining their human mind but have a shortened life-span.
There are also Manticores which are a sub-group of Traders.
Sylvestri: Not a lot of information was given about them and I wish that had not been the case but they seem to primarily Native Americans or Native Americans are primarily Sylvestri. Either way, I wish I had more information on them.

I had hoped for a more exciting Ordeal at the end but it fell a little short of the mark. The twist at the end has me curious enough for a 2nd book so fingers crossed.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the arc!

One of the best books I've read all year!

The writing in this book is just beautiful. It's lyrical, poetic, and any other lovely descriptive word you can think of. It's full of imagery and metaphors and is worth all the hype that is sure to come. The characters are delightfully complex and there are several twists to keep you on your toes. It was the perfect amount of bittersweet with a wonderful ending. A book worth all the stars.

A big thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an e-arc!

This was adorable!

This was an adorable YA read with a decently diverse set of characters. I loved the drama of life working at the castle and was glad that while things ended well, it was still realistic. I still cringed every time I heard the term "wenching."

I seriously considered DNF-ing this up until about 25% or so but I try to reserve that for books I'm hating rather than ones that just weren't catching my attention so I'm glad I persevered since the book did improve.

There was some beautiful writing in this book but it did have a tendency to be over-the-top and too flowery. I was expecting something else entirely when it came to the competition and that took some time to get past. ". . . a group of magicians face off in a daring game of magical feats to find the next headliner of the Conquering Circus" led me to believe that is was going to be a magician vs magician competition, Essen Tasch style from [b:A Gathering of Shadows|20764879|A Gathering of Shadows (Shades of Magic, #2)|V.E. Schwab|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1429627728l/20764879._SY75_.jpg|43242915], unfortunately that was not the case. The competition was whoever gave the best performance on stage which would have been an alright alternative had the magic not been so one-sided and one of the other competitors was actually capable of being competition.

I'd have liked more world-building as there was very little and a better understanding of the magic system. There is also, brace yourselves, a love triangle but it actually didn't bum me out. Overall, I consider this to be a successful debut and a lot of the things I didn't care for can be rectified in a sequel.

Thanks so much to the Publisher for an ARC of this book!
