This is def a solid 4 stars for me (but I know there's some bigots 1-starring it so I'm gonna round up to 5). I don't know that I've read a book with this sort of blend of topics and genres before. I really loved the main character. I can't stop looking at how she doesn't really belong in either world which has to be pretty difficult for people who immigrate to a new country and culture.
Also, fuck ICE and we for real need to fix our fucking immigration systems in the West. We have spent our entire damn existence either physically or financially going into other countries to fuck things up and then tell them that they can't come to our countries that we fucking stole by committing damn genocides on the Indigenous people here.

I think I'm just burnt out on YA fantasies right now. May comeback to try again

I've been having such a hard time with YA fantasies recently so I was very hesitant to finally pick this up but I am so glad I did! I loved the characters so freaking much. I could have done without the romance element but thankfully it wasn't too central to the story. The world was incredibly fascinating and I got totally sucked into the magic system. Cannot wait to read the next book.
I'm really tired of books being out here and making me feel emotions.
Thank you to the publisher for giving me an audiobook ARC via NetGalley
This was a very weird book but I've somehow already come to expect that of Rory Power. I am not usually a big fan of horror but I was just so curious since it was Rory Power (and I liked Wilder Girls) plus I have been doing my best to read outside of my comfort zone. Power's writing really does lend itself so very well to the thriller and horror genre. Everything in this book felt sketchy and off. Instead of an unreliable narrator, it felt like an unreliable town. The pit of my stomach was just squirming for most of the book in how uncomfortable everything was.
PS I think this would be a very cool book to adapt into a film.
