I was too young to appreciate how good this book was when it came out and my GRADE FOUR class had to read it. I just hate being forced to read something on a deadline rather than for personal interest. Re-read for a English lit class and I've since worn out the cover.

DNF audio 2 hours in and wait to get my hands on the physical. Really didn't like the narration

As if 2020 hasn't been enough of a mess. Take it back. Let's pretend this never happened.
So this is definitely not a book for everyone (though I do not agree with 3.5 ratings even remotely). I loved all the characters and the last 1/3 was just fascinating to be along the ride for but I could not explain this book to anyone. It's weird and wonky and definitely not for everyone because of the style alone. There's also a character with a particularly hard to read backstory. Though there is no graphic detail given, my stomach turned and I was so uncomfortable in every flashback scene she had to her step dad.

ahhh...I wanted to like this way more than I did. I also really disliked James...like A LOT. I don't know if that was what the author wanted but AGH I disliked him! The magic was cool and I liked getting the side of the trio in school and the cult people. Just didn't do anything special for me.

I really enjoyed this! I am just an absolute sucker for a historical murder mystery but I don't know that I've read many that have queer characters where we aren't reminded every chapter about bigoted people's thoughts. It was kind of nice to not have a whole book of slurs towards the reps in here. I was NOT expecting the end so lots of guessing the whole way through.

I liked this WAYYYYYY more than I expected. It's a little weird and dark but the characters were so great (especially Serafina). I'm so glad I have books 2 and 3 already. It tugged on my heartstrings a lot.
