WWWWWHHHHHHAAAAAATTTTT?! I did NOT see that ending coming! This is such a random and word and unique and cool book! It's almost like...The Hunger Games/Six of Crows + motorcycles + Hitler! Ugh! I'm so excited for the second book. The hoping between timelines was really cool--super well written as a whole. It was also kinda nice to focusing so much on the concentration camps while still acknowledging them. Helped make it an alternative history.

Agh! Why do I let myself be lured into a false sense of hope by authors?! Why?! Why?!

Anyways, super good but uh...prepare for your heart to be broken.

Graudin just never disappoints me.

This was such a fun book and had so much character development, relationship building and such a cool world. I surprisingly didn't get lost between the time and dimension jumps so I would say it's an accessible sci-fi. The romance were so adorable and I loved that they were a background thing instead of used to flood the plot with annoying tropes.

Essentially, Imogen is me (hair dye & pet obsession.) all the characters have their corks and are so likeable but different. truly adored this ragtag group.

Aww, that ending made my eyes water 😥😥😥
I'm excited for the sequel to this! Family drama and betrayal were good. Romances and LGBTQ rep were great! Love the development of the science/magic. There's some solid grey characters but as a whole, I loved how everyone's fate has been interwoven.

Hmm...I'm not sure. I feel like I liked it but I've honestly forgotten most of the book already! Either my brain is messed up or it's just forgettable?

This was so freaking adorable! The illustrations were fun and I loved the overall message and morals along with the fun "how to perform a magic trick" instructions littered throughout. Carter absolutely broke my heart.

I want to adopt this girl and protect her from the world! Why do middle grade books keeping making me cry?! I'll have to buy my own copy

REREAD:
Yeah I'm sorry. I still really like this book. It's cheesy and sweet and dark.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I am super shocked at how low this book is rated (3.35 stars as of me writing this) and how few ratings (412) there are for a YA fairytale retelling with a gorgeous cover and that was in a subscription book box.

Anyways...

Holy crap! I loved this book way more than I was anticipating. The love triangle was so well done and the sister's relationship that kinda mimicked the villain and her twin was so beautiful. One of the sisters is blind so I automatically thought she would be dependent on others but she takes the lead while you slowly see others less noticeable disabilities take effect. If you liked the Lunar Chronicles, pick this up! I'm excited for the sequel now.

I really didn't see any girls hating girls for stupid reasons and its got some diversity with one of the main characters being blind

3.5/5

This was a decent debut. Now it wasn't by any means original in the world of YA:

Hidden lineage☑️
Kinda love triangle with brothers ☑️
One of the brothers is misunderstood ☑️
Single dad with vague references to dead mom ☑️

But I really loved the process of exchanging blood or time as a physical currency. I also appreciate the focus being less on the romance but instead on our MC and her family. The ending was also a bit of a surprise just because the rest of the book was quite traditional fantasy YA. I'll def read the sequel.
