So this was actually freaking adorable and creepy. Olivia is like my second favourite MG pov.
Also, scarecrows are just clowns made of a vegetable.

Ugh...I wanted to like this book and the cover is gorgeous! The first few pages made me roll by eyes so many times that it isn't funny. The dialogue didn't sound right for any of the characters and nothing about the first 80 pages grabbed me or made me want to keep reading this (there's too many books in my TBR pile to force myself to read a book I don't like). The main female character was particularly unrealistic and none of her logic or actions made sense!
huh...well I definitely liked Jane Steele better. I think this book suffers from what most Sherlock Holmes retelling suffering from: the inability to write a Sherlock and a Watson which is sometimes doable if the retelling is Sherlock's daughter and Watson's son but that doesn't work in this situation. It's an enjoyable mystery but the characters are not Sherlock and Watson which was so annoying to me.
I don't normally enjoy anthologies but k did like this one! All the stories had some similarities but were also their own and holy hell LGBTQ+ rep! My favourite one was probably the very last one "Why They Watch Us Burn."
It's a cute, quick cheesy teen romance book...but it didn't make me want to vomit or punch someone which is pretty rare when it comes to contemporaries. Basically an updated version of the Breakfast Club with an actual conclusion for the Molly Ringwald character. I did find it kinda ridiculous how they talked about anxiety . I think I'll use this for reading slumps. it's not going to win the Nobel Prize for Literature but it's a good relaxing read.
I mean I "finished" the book by skipping 150 pages to and just reading the last 60 but that's WAY more than I thought I would actually do. This book is the example of why I tend to hate contemporaries.
But look Felicia..at least I tried?

Holy balls...just read this duology. the writing and setting and relationships and magic and realism is just amazing!
Holy balls...this book and series just destroyed me. It was so good and I will DEFINITELY be rereading it in the years to come.
the relationships and kick-ass women and twists shook me. the whole book was nonstop!
I literally read book 1 and book 2 in one day...

Wow! A refreshing and unique book to say the least. I really adore Alderman's writing!
I loved all the different POV and what each POV represents and the geography covered. The amount of issues tackled in under 400 pages is actually startling to me!
I really loved the little artifacts blurbs. So damn cool!
The ending: "have you considered writing this under a woman's name?" just brought me back to J.K. Rowling
