I enjoyed this book! regret letting it sit in my TBR pile for so long. the beginning was okay and a little slow but he last half or third of the book was fantastic! excited for book 2
I will definitely be picking up another booking this author because...wow...
I found all the time and location jumping to be hard to follow but it was beautiful other than that. In only one book there were tons of characters built on a world so unique. I absolutely loved and would recommend

DNF (60%)...I might come back to the book later on in the year. This book is really weird. Not necessarily in a bad way but the weirdness is never explained and it REALLY lagged. Not a whole lot happened which dulled me to death. I was also reading an epic book at the same time that I couldn't help compare it to. So much was happening in the other book but. Vassa in the Night just dragged on and on and on with nothing going on.
*deep exhale and drops book on desk* okay...it took me five days to get myself to page 72 before I just left this book alone...I read the entire Divergent book in a day so I am not a slow reader...I just don't see the point in reading a book where I get excited when a chapter ends because I want to stop reading the book (but I can't ever stop reading mid-chapter).
I get wanting to write uniquely but the language in this book was incredibly awkward. I found myself having to reread sentences and paragraphs constantly even while sitting in a silent room without distractions. I also found the world building to be lacking. My problem following this book was definitely influenced by this and the wording and language used. There's floating vehicles, potions, refugees and alchemist yet there was like zero explanation for any of it while there was simultaneously nothing happening!
The idea is creative and I will try to return to this book and give it another go later I the year but right now...very unimpressed with this book despite my love of magic, world hoping, political uprisings, female leads and romance. I have never given up on a book this early before

boy oh boy...I ended up just giving up on this book when I hit the halfway mark. I could not for the life of me understand the point of it. The writing was...okay, not great but okay. The plot was just nonexistent. I could see the "surprise" about Johan's preferences coming from the beginning, there was nothing to interest me and I LOVE historical fiction and I LOVE Europe and I LOVE Denmark. This book was incredibly disappointing and mind numbing boring. At page 30, I had to switch audiobook because I just simply wouldn't keep reading...audiobook didn't help though. Big waste of time.
I loved this book! My God! Everyone I know was saying the first book was good and the series goes downhill after that but I really liked this book. I think it was odd that there were so many climaxes and I wasn't sure where it was going but it kept me reading for all 500+ pages.
4.5/5
I love Anna Kendrick and her style of comedy and her career. The book wasn't as focused on funny stories as I thought it would be but I really enjoyed it and loved hearing her voice reading the audiobook. Well worth the 2 months I spent on the waitlist on my library!
