So I read the Black God's Drums by this author which I really enjoyed so I had little doubt I would like the writing (note: the writing was great). I was incredibly interested in the premise. I think it's a hard one to write that not every author would be capable of doing. Taking such monstrous people from our world and twisting them to be real monsters while messing with other elements. It worked. It really did. I would've actually loved for this to be expanded into a full novel. The whole story was unique and creative and fresh which isn't the easiest thing to pull off when it's actual history. I'm not American but even with my understanding of US history from Canada, I was able to understand it. It's very clearly American history but still absolutely accessible to non-Americans.

So I didn't love this as much as I loved the Ruined trilogy but I enjoyed it more than Reboot. I wasn't super crazy about the romance to start but as the book went on, I realized it was being used for a purpose and not an "OTP love at first sight." I do wish the author would have extended the timeline because it seemed a little ridiculous all this happened over the course of like 2 weeks. Even if you have to time jump, I could imagine the characters getting more comfortable with each other off camera and building friendships, etc.

I am genuinely curious and concerned about what the inside of Mindy McGinnis's brain looks like. This--not unlike her past works--is weird as hell. While I doubt it will be for everyone, I think of her stuff that I have read, it is something I think will be a bit more appealing than something like This Darkness Mine. You can't help but see both sides of Tress and Felicity. I think the switching between her being bricked in and the reasons why...didn't build up as much tension as I thought it would...but at the same time, I think this would be a cool mini-series because of that. I am particularly interested in where another book will go since this is a duology. The ending seems relatively...difficult to make into another book. I will definitely read the sequel though.

I liked this. Not quite as much as Serpent & Dove and for once I know why. I am a big fan of bickering. Of a bit of cat and mouse between characters leading to a romance. With that being sorted out at the end of Serpent & Dove, it wasn't replaced with continued bickering or giving that slow of funny bickering to another couple. That's not bad. It's just what I enjoy in books. That's why I adore To Have and to Hoax, You Deserve Each Other, A Curious Beginning...the Gilmore Girls. The list is never-ending. I am very curious to see where the plot goes in a third book and I do think the plot became more complex and the conflicts grew to replace those scenes that had bickering.
Oh, big Coraline vibes. Very good middle grade to pick up around Halloween. I already had issues with clowns and dolls so this DID NOT help that but I loved how smart the main character is.
This is yet another library borrow that I will have to go buy my own copy of. The illustrations are GORGEOUS. The character facial expressions are dead on for the entire graphic novel. This would be a fantastic Halloween read. It's got a missing sister, a flooding small town with magical powers, a creepy manor, a ghost in a well and a secretive coven. One of the best graphic novels I've ever read. (Disclaimer: I haven't read a ton. Maybe a 2 dozen).
