I received the eAudio ARC through NetGalley

So this is definitely my least favourite Marissa Meyer book but it is by no means bad. Meyer's fantasy books offer very well written character in a setting that we're familiar with but has been messed with and made her own. I think the characters in this were just as strong as I expected but it's missing a twist. It's too by the book/by the known structure. It's by no means a bad book but it doesn't feel like a Marissa Meyer book which was a bit disappointing. The ending was nauseatingly happy and clean (which may not be for me but I know is a big appeal in YA contemporaries). The setting was fun and it did have some discussions about things we struggle with today (eco-tourism, animal rescue, finances, etc).

Not as good as Gideon the Ninth bit still an enjoyable read. Eager for book 3

I really liked the first third of the book and the last third was quick paced with a decent wrap up but I struggled with the middle chunk. It wasn't quite keeping my interest so I'm putting this on my "reread during a different season or different mood" list.

Rep: f/f romance

So the first time around, I read this only with the physical book and I STRUGGLED and gave it a 2 stars.

My friend asked me to try it again and suggested the audiobook (which had since been released) so I figured I'd give it a shot. Emma Fenney did an amazing job narrating this book which is why I bumped my rating up to 3 stars. She really did make it come alive. However, the characters still felt so flat and one-dimensional to me (this could totally be a product of it being a translation). Because they just felt...meh, I could not care or even make sense of any of the relationships. I saw a few people comment on my socials that they thought book one was just okay but that the sequel was much better so should my library get the second title on audiobook, I will borrow it and give it a shot. I'm so sad I didn't love these books because the covers are so gorgeous.
