rather more boring than it could've been.
also, i know i've been yuripilled so i might be somewhat mistaken in saying this but - isn't it odd that the witch and the princess are framed romantically when the witch is actively also concerned about the princess being twelve and getting proposed to by a man older than her?? we don't get to see the witch's age but it's clear she's old enough to have finished extensive training for her magic and lived long enough working at the palace, so she's definitely NOT a minor. it's just VERY odd to read her blushing at the princess' every compliment and getting excessively flustered about going on a "date" with her and then follow that up w her saying "nooo the princess is 12 she can't get married to a man older than me!!" ?? girl. why are u blushing like a schoolgirl when a 12 year old says she wants to be friends with you, then ????? as a Certified Adult, I would NEVER . she just treats the princess more like a shoujo love interest and it's creeping me out a bit,,,, please tell me i haven't just mistaken myself

by far the most bizzarre book in my local library. just very obviously written to fantasize about having a born-yesterday pretty young woman be naked around you often and willingly, and also be a cool martial artist. genuinely couldn't be less interested
god it pains me to review this so low but 3.5/5 really isn't bad !! the most important part of this is that I had fun - but that isn't a particularly difficult thing for an alagaesia book to make me feel, because i'm so attached to it. so yeah - a pretty nice return for old fans, but not as good as the inheritance trilogy.
firstly, this was perhaps a little too long. there were moments in the book where i felt the pace needed speeding up, such asthe arc when murtagh catches the fish, and towards the end when he's thralled , although in both cases I understand why we're lingering in places. the pace picks up at about halfway through, and then slows back down, which is frustrating.
primarily this is a book about murtagh and thorn and how they confront their long-held traumas to grow into the rider-dragon pair they become. but there's still so much going on that sometimes it feels like that gets put into the back-burner in favour for extended action and tension scenes, often in parts where thorn cannot act, and sometimes even where he can't speak to murtagh. this is a pity, i feel - i know the book's called murtagh, but the point is that he's a rider and we haven't had much chance to meet or interact with thorn before !! so i'd love more time with him! murtagh is nice and all but i love dragons more than i could ever love a man. and his sense of humour is a little awkward to me.
the plot itself, apart from being a bit long and winded, is fine. leaves us very much with questions, which paolini explains in the author's note that they will be answered in time! great, but it does feel a little frustrating to reach the point in the book with about 60 pages left and know squarely that you're not gonna get the answers you wanted.
the characters are fun to be around, though! very much so. it was lovely to be back in alagaesia, with characters i enjoyed meeting the first time round. i fear a little of murtagh's appeal is dampened here, probably because i enjoy a mystery more than i enjoy knowing something for certain, which makes the sequences where he dreams about his past a little dull for me - but if murtagh is your blorbo from the inheritance trilogy, you'll probably enjoy this much more than i did. newer characters are also all-round enjoyable - i especially loved uvek and the werecats (to no one's surprise), the former of which really became my favourite in the last stretch. i hope he comes back. guy's way too cool.
so yeah. this might not be paolini's best work, but i'm still as much a fan of alagaesia as i was before i started reading this. i will most definitely be reading whatever comes next !!

it's true. the side couple is far more interesting than the main couple. main couple is comparatively forgettable. I love the little autistic twink and his buff gangster himbo. wasn't expecting their problems to be overcoming generational trauma, gang violence, and un-pay-offable debt but I was expecting it to be "dick so big it won't fit in my ass" so I'm glad I haven't lost my touch in the small timeframe I haven't read BL.
main couple was, as said before, forgettable. not particularly compelling. generally speaking the seriousness of the topics portrayed didn't mesh well with the overall comedic tone. I am also going to need yohan to get that Fuckass Wolf Skeleton Tattoo REMOVED. it's STUPID and DUMB and SILLY and makes him look like a FOOL. get something cooler ur brother set u up w that one

girl now why was he saying he doesn't like men and then just all of a sudden all over the main guy?? now I'm actually an enjoyer of quicker love stories and sometimes even insta-love works for me, but this was just totally out of the blue. like sure he was impressed by the guy's big dick and loyal personality but there was very little other indication that he was dtf let alone start a committed relationship w him. pity cause I'm a big lover of animal hybrid stuff and the Korean brand of hybrid (where they can shift form) is super fun as an idea... but yeah. this one gets a little bit into bio essentialism too which erm... not the most fun.
un po' semplice a dire la verità, ma l'atmosfera era molto evocativo. mi piace l'idea del sangue che diventa più buono con l'età come il vino!
genuinely the best adult BL I've read my whole life. yes I will elaborate on this
moscareto and okdong are the pairing of the century, just such phenomenal work they're putting out !! this is by far their magnum opus and I genuinely dropped my phone and put my two hands together in praise when I read they were working on the side stories for this. joy like this is hard to come by !!
the comedy and sexiness of this series is pulled off so so well. they manage to keep each sex scene fresh and erotic as the last, and funny without pulling you out of the scene. they're so tender with each other and yet so wild. freaks me out that they only made a safe word at the end but they were VERY lucid throughout all their sex scenes as far as I remember and everything was very consensual. I have no idea how moscareto and okdong made this series only get better and better with each update and I hope every single bl author reads this so they can learn from the best.
my ONLY gripe is that the business stuff felt like it resolved way too easily but also it was pretty funny so I'm willing to let that slide. I want a wedding side story though LET THEM LEGALISE GAY MARRIAGE !!!!!!!!!!!
as for the pairing - never has there been a couple more compatible. they're total opposites, have nothing in common, and yet they're perfectly made for each other. THIS is what I like to see. ridiculous and also realistic! something that could totally happen and also would never !! I have no idea how to describe this it's frying my brain I love it too much !! please please I beg you please read this. only if you like reading sex scenes though because a whole massive chunk is that and it's not shippable because that's where a whole chunk of their individual character development and relationship development occurs.

genuinely adorable. touches lightly on living in a homophobic society, moves past it a little too quick for my liking, but I didn't read this for that - this is meant to be a cute little story about countryside bumpkin meeting city boy, and that's exactly what you get!
extra points for how beautiful the art is. genuinely so lovely to look at!

just such an exquisite book. a shining beacon of translation, too. I wish I had even a crumb of what Kwon Yeosun and Janet Hong have <3
I do not have the patience to push through this right now. so so surface level for me. I don't need any more of this type of book. this one especially is SO heavy-handed.
I see a lot of people reviewing this saying "maybe Korean literature just isn't for me" and I PROMISE you this is an outlier. oh my god please read more Korean literature. just nothing else that has a storefront on the cover. please don't give up on translated literature I'm begging you
