Sometimes picking up a book without context into what the book is about and going strictly based on the cover can bite you in the ass - which unfortunately is exactly what happened with me and The Last Animal. The premise is interesting but the execution fell flat. Instead of the writing style enhancing the plot and the characters, it made me want to fall asleep. There are some lines that stand out, but overall the writing felt choppy and disconnected and ultimately left me wanting so much more.

After devouring and loving Vol. 1, I immediately had to get Vol. 2 so that I could learn more about why Kaidou was so strict and tense with Suma and this installment did not disappoint. I loved the flashbacks to The Incident that changed the world's view on dinosaur's and the impact on Suma's father and Kaidou.

With Suma's probationary period over, we're introduced to a bunch of new characters, the other department leads, that Suma will now work with to determine her final placement. Am I going to purchase Vol. 3-5 as soon as possible to jump back into Dinoland? Absolutely, yes.

I didn't know how badly I needed a manga series about a Dino-zoo until now. While a lighthearted read, the story touches on some serious topics - the safety risks of interacting with wild creatures, the responsibility of those keepers to ensure the health and safety of their charges, and the consequences of mistakes in a career of animal (or Dino) care. The art, characters, and story have me absolutely hooked in just one Volume.

Something unique and special to this manga is the author's collaboration with a paleontologist to incorporate 'articles' between chapters to deliver the facts and more information from a scientific perspective.
