Stopping about 40% in. It's crazy and creepy that so many people believe or were brainwashed, but I feel like I've read enough. There are too many other books demanding my time that I think I'll like better.

Great historical teen read. I loved the characters and how fast the story moved. I also really enjoyed all the cultural information. So refreshing to have such diversity in YA. #WeNeedDiverseBooks

This is a powerful and important book and a must read. It begins with an incident that results in the death of a young black man, who was shot by a random white man. The entire story is told from multiple POV, which allows the author to show how much the witnesses' accounts can differ. More importantly, in my opinion, it shows how everyone is affected differently following such a tragedy.

In the other reviews, some people feel that the language was too harsh. I didn't feel that way at all. This is a tragic story that happens in a rough neighborhood. The book wouldn't have had the same impact if it had not included cuss words, gang rituals, abuse and drug use. Also, some did not like the many characters and their alternating narration. I did have some trouble distinguishing each character in the beginning because the narrator alternates so quickly, but there were enough clues provided to sort out who was who.

Fair warning: There are many conflicting versions of the shooting and the character of the victim. Do not expect a neat, tidy conclusion.

Very informative book about an interesting subject.

This story follows several story lines that are interwoven throughout the book. It's pretty heavy on romantic relationships, but there's a purpose to each. Zobair uses these relationships so show the many issues facing the children of immigrants as they struggle to balance the tradition of their faith and culture after being raised in America. Each character struggles with these issues differently, which allows the author to cover many types of issues. All struggle with balancing a career with family, but they go about it in different ways. The book does a great job showcasing these struggles without judging one as better than another.

I couldn't get into this. The dialog is so choppy and stilted. It felt forced and therefore not a good read.

I picked this up for work-related reasons, but it's just not for me. It's ok, but I just didn't want to pick it back up and there are too many other books to read so I'm stopping about 2/3rds of the way through.

This is a dark, mature YA novel, and it lives up to the hype. It's a really great story that focuses on loyalty and morals with the romance angle being secondary. I read it way too fast and now will have to wait way too long to read the next book. That's probably my biggest complaint.

I loved this book and these characters. I began to see how everything was coming together halfway through the book, but it was still a really great story.
