It's a thriller mystery like "Gone Girl," but the main characters are a mother and teenage daughter. The narrator alternates from mother to daughter as the mom investigates her daughter's apparent suicide. This is a disturbing story that makes me really appreciate that I was a bookworm in a small town as a teenager.
This is such a great story that deals with some heavy issues. I've heard it compared to "The Help," but I believe it is a much darker version.
I really liked the bookstore and the characters that worked there, but I had a hard time stomaching the lead character Esme and her loser boyfriend.
Some parts made me laugh out loud, but I skimmed over other parts. I didn't care to read the long chapter about religion, and the middle is largely composed of his experiences in the Chicago theatre scene which I wasn't too interested in. Hopefully he'll write another book and talk more about his more recent past. I wanted to hear more about the movies he's in and Parks and Rec.
