I got to chapter 6 (16%) and while the world is interesting I don't really care about any of these character.

A Whole New World

25% in and the book is only now starting to be different from the movie.

One of the rules of fan fictions is to not just copy the source word for word, but to actually use it to create your own story. We really don’t need the book to give us beat for beat the first half of the movie. This isn’t a novelization of the movie, it’s suppose to be a “what if” story.

I’m  DNF-ing. This is too boring.

First DNF of the year!

The dialog was just not for me. Really sad cause I like this concept and the rest of the book was fine. Its just one of those things

I think my biggest negative is just how wordy this manga is. Some of these panels were just walls of text.

I do really like the art! I love when the manga uses full pages and wide panels. Close ups of eyes and faces looked great. (This artist REALLY likes drawling eyes) Gore and violence scene with full pages were great.

I did skim the entire series.
I think that its interesting that this manga does really focus on one character but the theory talked about in the story itself. (the inquisitor is the only consistent character) Like heliocentrism and thaumazein is the actual main character.

I'm sad that the subject matter didn't hook be because the art and panel presentation is something I really enjoy. Definitely something you should pic up if you like historical fiction.

Rogue Squadron

DNF at 46%. I really wanted to like this. I really like the characters and I was interested in a few of their backstories and how they would continue on their pilot careers. The audiobook even has really good music and sound effects. And the descriptions of dog fights and the technology is awesome. But there are just SO MANY characters. We don't really follow one person or even one side of the fight. This book is narratively speaking all over the place. I had a hard time following who was who and what was going on. And the book didn't stay with the characters and plots I was actually interested in for very long before jumping to some new POV or some random characters plot. I might try out something else by this author or maybe a Star Wars book that just focuses on ONE character. So sad to DNF this one.

When in Rome

DNF at 41%, Chapter 15. Its just so boring. There isn't even a sub-plot outside the romance to keep my attention.

I'm so angry. This came highly recommended from a podcast that I like. I was really skeptical when the author announced in the introduction that they were still a Christian that lived outside of purity culture. The final straw was when a person being interviewed said that she was married to a republican while she was a democrat. The women in this book are still in the choke hold of religious oppression that its completely blinded them to the fact that they are still in the throws of purity cultures big sister: anti-feminism. For an author that is on a mission to show the religious trauma of purity culture to still be participating in that culture is honestly disgusting. Skip this book. It is not as pro-woman as it seems to think it is.

Running Close to the Wind

Alexandra Rowland

DNF at 9%. I'm so disappointed. I loved "A Taste of Gold and Iron" and was seriously looking forward to a new book from this author. But "Running Close to the Wind" is VERY tonally different. You could tell me it was written by a different author entirely and I would believe you.

The crude humor, constantly sexual innuendos, and the MC constantly calling himself a "sexy little slut" unironically. The MC is also REALLY annoying and unlikable.

I don't think the book is bad, its just not for me. :/

Washington Bullets

Vijay Prashad

DID NOT FINISH: 13%

DNF at 13%. I agree with some of the other 1 star reviews. This language used in this book makes the text really inaccessible. Also, the author has completed decided to for go context and details regarding incidents. There are a lot of complicated ideas here that the author really don't have the luxury to jump around and so quickly as he does. Incredibly unreadable.
