Sad I am DNF-ing this. Really like this author's other work. But while reading this I just kept thinking about other works that do this concept better. Also the info dumping, glossing over huge details, and neck break speed the plot moves at was just killing my enjoyment. I actually read a lot of middle grade so I really thought I would like this.

Got 39 pages in and just didn't care. My library loan laps and I have no desire to put in another loan for it.

That's quite the personality you got there Wilson. Not for me. DNF before finishing chapter one (5% mark, about 25 mins in)

DNF-ing this before even finishing chapter one. (3% mark, about 9 mins in)

The authorial voice is grating. I agree with other that Ness does not translate well to text.

Guys, I can't do this. I can not defeat this absolute 48 hour long behemoth of an audio book.

Stopping at 11%, 5 hours in, somewhere in chapter 5. Shes like, 19 right now, just got her first apartment, just made her Broadway debut in "I Can Get It for You Wholesale" singing in an office chair. And I am BORED. Despite what you might think "I was very talented at birth and I only ever did things my way" is not a very interesting life story.

She keeps going on and on about being obsessed with "the truth" and "facts." She doesn't want to do anything anyone says for her to do because it doesn't feel "authentic" or "factual." Lets call it what it really is: this woman is a control freak. She has to control her narrative SO MUCH, she is LITERALLY controlling the narrative by giving us every single detail and also actually narrating the book herself. Did her VICE GRIP of control on every single detail of her life make her successful: probably. Was that throttle-hold of control interesting to read: no.

Liked the bits where she talked about clothes and fashion. She seems like a really passionate artist. Also when they added snippets of her music into the audio book.

She is a very talented singer and an absolute icon. I do love her. But I don't 48 hours love her.

I don’t think I have DFN’ed something so fast lol.

This is very lyrical, to the point of confusion. This book is so purple, I can’t even read it.

Really sad, cause this concept sounds great.

DNF at 13%. The writing style and tone just isn’t for me. It reads very much like a children’s story book and I just was not enjoying it.

Was drawn in on the premise and the twist on the vampire genre. I knew this was a character study and I went in with the proper expectations. But I absolutely can not stand Lydia. She is whiny, meek, and has the spine of a cooked noodle. I kept thinking "what is wrong with this woman? Stand up girl!" Looked at the reviews for some answers and learned that this book falls into something called "Sad Woman"  literary genre. One Guardian article later, and I'm DNF-ing and avoiding this genre at all cost from now on. I absolutely do not have time for sad privileged girl's being sad. Lydia's self pitying and naïve behavior was infuriating. And after reading that first puppet scene, I'm out.

Can't stand the dialog, the writing, the internal monologuing. The two main characters are COMPLETELY unlikeable. And I agree with other reviewers, this is NOT how a restaurants works. Had to stop after Logan dragged Xavier into the office and yelling at him for answering his question. There is NO WAY I am I'm pushing through 32 chapters of this.
