Into the land of the Shire, where a hobbit by the name of Bilbo Baggins lives. An ordinary life he lives until who comes to his doorstep, but none other than Gandalf the wizard. And so his life of perfectly timed breakfast, teatime, and relaxation stops. Instead, he finds himself in the company of dwarves and sometimes Gandalf in search of the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug. But the path to stolen treasure is not easy one. For it’s laid with dangerous creatures, mysterious forests, a magic ring, and a dragon that would eat all as a snack.

I don’t know why I waited so long to read The Hobbit. I absolutely fell in love with Tolkien’s world building and his characters. You couldn’t help but relate! I found myself laughing, pitying, and admiring the characters. The only thing I wasn’t happy with was how I felt the last chapters were cramped together. I would have been okay with a longer book so details of the storyline were expanded. Besides that I was a fan! 4/5 stars for me.

When “Savior” Dodie Farlisle moves to Chatsworth from New York, it’s with the intent of starting fresh. With a new house, friends, and a library not far from her; it seems she’s gotten her wish. That is until the public library closes unexpectedly. And so begins the lending library. A place for the community to still come together and share their love of books. But as Dodie’s passion for books gets fulfilled, her secret one of wanting a baby starts to consume her everyday life. Suddenly work, friends, family, a budding new romance, and the library, take the back burner.

I honestly wanted to love this book. The premise sounded so promising but I found Dodie not to be very like able. She was selfish in her desire to have a baby and it felt like it didn’t matter at what cost she’d reach her goal. Her friends Sullivan and Kendra, and her sisters Maddie and Coco were like able characters. And it’s not because they were perfect but because even with their flaws I was able to connect with them.

Shep and Dodie’s love story felt a bit forced. It was as though one minute they were going out to dinner and the next Shep was practically living with her. From how slow blooming their relationship started, it picked up quickly. And the secrets they held from each other were too monumental for me. I wanted them to just talk to each other already and that wasn’t happening. So much was revealed/unraveled at the end that could have been interspersed throughout the book.

So although I didn’t love The Lending Library, I didn’t hate it either. There were a number of things I liked. I liked the words of encouragement written on the book markers. I likes Maddie’s carefree attitude. I liked Coco’s warm spirit. I liked Kendra calling out Dodie and being a good friend to her. And I liked Sullivan for being there for Dodie and introducing Terabithia to her.

Thank you Netgalley and Lake Union Publishing for a copy of this book! The Lending Library is out now and is available on kindle unlimited.

I’m not one to usually read end of the world books but I decided to give Praying for Rain a try at the recommendation of my book club and I’m glad I did! Plus the synopsis sounded good! 4.5/5 stars.

“I have to get Rain back because I know something she doesn’t. Rainbow Williams is a fucking survivor. And I’m not done using her yet.”

April 23rd. That’s the day the world is supposed to end. And it’s only 3 days away. For Rain, in her town of Franklin Springs, Georgia, this means fear and chaos from everyone. People have fled the town in hopes of surviving elsewhere. Neighbors, friends, and family have turned on each other as supplies dwindle and the apocalyptic day draws near. As for Rain, she’s counting down the days until the pain she’s been pushing down and running from is no more. She’s ready to die.

“Supplies. Shelter. Self-defense.”
This is Wes Parker’s mantra. He’s not ready to die and believes he can survive the end of the world. He’s gotten this far in life with his instincts and the end of the world is not any different. It’s no coincidence that he finds himself in the town of Franklin Springs. And as luck would have it, he meets Rain. His ticket to surviving.

Both are running from demons in their past: one intent on surviving and the other on surviving until the apocalypse. I loved getting to know Wes and Rain. They are flawed characters that just tugged on my heartstrings once I got to know more about them. Although the story takes place over a few days there’s so much we learn. About why Rain is ready for death. About why Wes decided Franklin Springs was the place to go. About how everyone heard about the apocalypse and if there’s any chance of surviving it. And of course about how even in the midst of craziness going on, sometimes love can happen.

If you’re looking for a steamy, end of the world book that will leave you wanting more, Praying for Rain is the book for you! It is a trilogy so keep that in mind. I’m planning on reading the next 2 as soon I can!
