Weirdly satisfying and unsatisfying
A Place Called Fear is the second book in the Maggie Novak series. Maggie is a detective with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and she unintentionally becomes a first responder while looking for a colleague. Her college, Clay Young, is found in his car and has committed suicide. With one of their brothers down, everyone is vested into knowing why he killed himself and he set a bomb to harm those that tried to get in his car.
Interesting premise right? I thought so too but Maggie has a habit of putting herself into danger. Where she could call for backup, she goes to places or to meet people by herself. One of your own has seemingly targeted them. Wouldn’t it be smarter to play safe?
Then her relationship with Steve who’s her boyfriend or perhaps fiancé but we’re not sure because she doesn’t remember if she told him yes or no to the proposal. She keeps things from him that in a relationship makes sense to share. I mean a bomb exploded with you there. That seems like pertinent information to share with your loved ones. When he’s in town she never wants to see him but when he’s gone, she laments about him. I don’t think she knows what she wants with him.
Her siblings are another story. Although we’ve learned in both the first and second book that they don’t get along, we don’t get a clear reason why. Yes their parents divorced. Yes there were sides taken. But you’d think after so many years a conversation would be had by all. Not everything has to be perfect but can it not be awkward silences, passive aggressive jabs, and blowouts?
Detective Loomis like always was my favorite. His wit and sarcasm managed to balance Maggie and make me like her although I was cursing her internally.
I know it seems like I absolutely hated the book which isn’t the case. But the things I mentioned made it hard for me to enjoy it like I thought I would. With that being said, I will still read the next book because I have to know if this marriage to Steve will happen; will the siblings ever get along; and what on earth is going on with Maggie’s dad!

I just finished The Stranger Beside Me a half an hour ago, and I have to say I’m a bit shaken. I chose to read this partially because it’s a buddy read and also because Ted Bundy was/is a disturbing and interesting subject.
The book is written by Ann Rule who worked with Ted Bundy at a crisis clinic and knew him for years before she found out about the crimes he had committed. Like most of the people who knew Bundy, she could not believe all that he was accused off and it seems she never really did until towards the end. To her there were two Teds. Her friend Ted, who reminded her of her younger brother, who opened up to her about not knowing his father. And the mystery Ted, one who was more than capable of committing horrific crimes. For some reason she seemed to overly sympathize with him much to my chagrin.
I won’t lie, I had to stop reading a few times because the book got to me. It’s hard to imagine that there are people who exist who are like this; smooth, charismatic, handsome, manipulative, narcissistic, prevaricators, and more, who are able to compartmentalize so much to be to live semi normal lives. And yet they do exist. The Stranger Beside Me gives you a glimpse into Ted Bundy’s life and it’s a scary one. The book is written in alternating viewpoints by Ann Rule, Ted Bundy, and various police departments. We learn of Ted’s past, his meeting with Ann, the multiple women who loved him, his escalating and vicious crime sprees, and how he finally got apprehended and his time in court.
If you’re a fan of true crime books, I’d definitely recommend giving this a try.

Everyone has secrets. Some more than others.
-Jane moves to Pirriwee Peninsula for some mysterious reason. She moves with her son Ziggy who’s dad is out of the picture. Jane’s secretive about him and you just have to wonder who was he? And what did he to do Jane?
-Madeline has three kids with Abigail, her oldest, being from another marriage. Abigail has been acting up; being a teenager some would say. But it’s a secret project of hers that brings unwanted attention to the family. And to Madeline, that just won’t do.
-Celeste is beautiful, rich, with a seemingly perfect life. She has twin boys Max and Josh. And a husband who is never around. But life isn’t perfect and neither are marriages. What secret is she hiding?
Big Little Lies centers around these women and how they try to juggle home life and school life. For at a school like Pirriwee Public, everyone has a secret to hide. And it’s one of those many secrets that lead to someone’s death. I’ve been meaning to read this book for a while and I flew through it. I like how it was written with each woman’s point of view so we could see how they were coping with everything going on. The extra bit of information offered during the interview process was a pleasant surprise. So happy I finally read it!
