This book? Read it.

It will change your life for the better.

Never before have I read such a good Greek Mythos retelling. It’s focus on just one character is commendable, it’s message clear. It drags you into Medusa’s world both through text and illustration. It is perfect.

Five stars.

Yes, yes, yes.

It had me hooked from start to finish.

The ending was a little, well, boring. I really felt after the second there were so many ways they could go but this left me unsatisfied.

Not to say it wasn’t a good book but I just didn’t feel like it was the ending Alina deserved.

Three stars.

The first fifth or so dragged but the rest made up for it. Engaging, unusual, easily the most unique book I have read this year.

Four stars.

I didn’t like it, I didn’t hate it. At some points the writing was luscious, at some points so flat I just raced from page to page aimlessly.

Although I generally liked how everything was wrapped up, some ambiguity would have done this book some good, I think, especially around the brother. How quickly Ari recovered after getting his casts off also threw me off a bit — trust me, it’s not like that in real life.

I certainly see why people adore this book, and I must say I did fall in love with the characters. Still, something felt missing.

Three and a half stars.

Wow.

In an insight into a community so rarely touched on, Alderman creates an intriguing set of characters and a fascinating tale of discovery of the past.

I will not pretend that I did not go into this book without a pre-existing soft spot created by the 2018 film but this book surpassed even that. I enjoyed Ronit’s humour, the truth slowly weaved out of our moments with Esti and Dovid growing and realising he could be his own man.

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys stories of the mundane brought into clarity, enjoyers of stolen moments and those looking for interesting stories out with the usual canon. It both fascinated me and left me craving more.

Four stars.
