Very cute. some of the vignettes are kind of newspaper comics style (without the bleakness and heavy-lidded ennui).
It's only like a chapter of a story, but I am a sucker for futuristic space colony visions. I recommend waiting for additional editions to come out, so you're not left hanging.
One of the most page-turning short story collections While the stories aren't really "interlocking" they go together well enough that they could be vignettes or excerpts from one massive novel. I can't wait to read the Sympathizer now!
Futureland is a thought provoking page-turner. It fits in with other depictions of a hypercapitalist future such as Oryx and Crake and Snowcrash. It is a book of short stories, but they all take place in the same world and milieu, so in a way it is like reading a novel. I felt like I could have known many of the characters, or seen myself in their shoes.
Bleak tale of the Jimmy Corrigans of Chicago. One of the more intricate graphic novels I have encountered. Besides just being an interesting and touching story, it also is a fascinating window on life in Chicago around the time of the 1893 Colombian Exhibition.
Really good. It would have been better if it were longer. I felt like the trans issues could have been explored more.
the second volume felt stronger than the 1st, probably because #1 was occupied mostly with setting the scene. I'd recommend to anyone interested waiting until a whole bunch of these come out, and then checking them all out from your local library in one big clump, that you can then read on a saturday night.
Just as strong as the 1st volume! The mystery of what the hell is even going on thickens! Also features 2016's It microbe, the Tardigrade.
I don't feel like I can say so much about this book, without spoiling all the different twists; that's how many there are. There is also a fair amount of digression, which I don't mind, especially for a book that is really about a fictional (steampunk-magical) world. I feel like it's also a good book to discuss. Recommended topics include: use of plot devices (skilled vs clumsy); tropes vs inverted tropes; fantasy world politics; &c.
Super creepy page-turner! I was disturbed by how the book made me identify with the pathetic Jack despite myself. The Shining feels very personal and cathartic. By the end it started creeping into my dreams.
