New from New Jersey.... Less toxic than Toxie.

This book reminded me of a spy novel. I like how it illustrates the connections between our history of slavery and today's racial structures by showing an alternate history in which slavery never ended. Also, the story moves fast enough that it'll take me a while to think of any issues or problematic elements it may have.

Hard to pick out stories that stood out, since each story was itself outstanding. The Levar Burton and Terry Bisson excerpts made me want to read the rest of their novels. I also liked the non-fiction essays at the end by Tananarive Due and Mumia Abu-Jamal.

Marlowe's play only takes up less than half of this book. The rest is commentaries, detailing the context in which Doctor Faustus was written, first performed, published, and finally revived on the modern stage. Now I have to re-watch Jan Svankmajer's Faust.

Can't wait to read the next one.

I couldn't put this book down! I also enjoyed King's conception of psychic powers. Stephen King's use of humor (deliberate or not) helped to make Firestarter extremely enjoyable. Another reason I enjoyed Firestarter was that it included most of my favorite Stephen King tropes (e.g. italics).

Cute, but weird. The art was interesting; astrologers and magicians wear suits and ties.

Surreal, absurdist children's stories. Perfect read for April Fools' day. On re-reading Sideways stories, I realized this book made me weird. So, mystery solved.
