a great cozy read for someone who loves coffee, books, and writing (aka me)

went on a little longer than it needed to and the switching between timelines and characters gave me a little bit of whiplash around the 75% mark, but the writing was strong, the characters were all fleshed out and compelling, and the mystery kept me intrigued the entire novel.

the story itself is good, but I think the style of storytelling just isn't one I can get into. the prose was lovely though!

every time I exited a movie theatre after reading this book in grade 7, I would always think of this book's opening line.
you can tell that S. E. Hinton wrote this at age 16 - the writing is repetitive at times, the themes are too spoon fed to the reader in scenes, and some moments fall flat - but regardless of that fact, this book stays with me because of it's heart. you can't help but keep reading, hoping that every thing works out for Ponyboy and Johnny, even though nothing in real life comes that easy. the bonds of brotherhood (both by blood and by choice) that is central to this novel is its strength and its why I love this story so much.

a masterful work on the importance of community and the failings of our municipal government to provide adequate support for marginalized and low-income families and individuals.
i love my city, but it is not without it's faults (there are MANY) and Hernandez does an incredible job pulling back the curtain on this reality that many people in our city would rather ignore. poignant, raw, and emotional with regard to both the triumphs and tragedies woven throughout the story.
highly recommend this book. read canadian.
