I LOVED this book and so wish that it had existed when I was an awkward, fat teen! There's such a great range of essays, poems, and art (in the digital ARC I had some of the art was still TK but what's in here is already great). I love how intersectional it is and how hopeful, helpful, and angry it is. Both affirming and eye-opening. I F-ing love it.
This book holds up!!

This is a moving story of family, culture, and what people will do to and for one another. It's a compelling mystery--I meant to just skim this enough to write a booktalk about it (it's one of the assigned summer reading books) but I got sucked in and had to read it myself. The Haitian vudou elements are interesting and add a bit of fantastic mystery--in terms of what maybe literally happens or doesn't happen?
Definitely recommended for readers looking for a diverse contemporary book with a bit of unique mystery/thriller flavor.

This is another book that hooked me as I was skimming it to write a booktalk for it. The shifting narration is really compelling, and I really appreciate the way so explicitly Gratz connects Cuban and Syrian refugees to Jewish refugees in WWII--refugees who most people today feel extremely sympathetic to in a way that a) a lot of Americans in the 1930s didn't b) a lot of Americans today don't feel toward other refugees.
It's a book that's well-meaning and compelling--at times some of the individual events seem a bit contrived but the overall effect is good, and the way the stories intersect with each other is very surprising and moving. Recommended to young readers who love WWII stories and survival stories.

I do miss Erica Henderson's art but this is still adorbs. I love the escape room premise! So much! And then a GHOST LIBRARIAN? Stop pandering to me so directly, Ryan North!! (jk don't)

I really respect Kelly Thompson's storytelling priorities: found families, pop culture quips, and cats. Sorry to see this series end but interested to see where these characters go next (and how long their marriage remains canon...)

ugh, mad this is cancelled! This series was so goofy and weird and smart about reality television tropes! I love those things!

ugh this series is just so good!! I'm so glad Kamala had her ~coming out party~, I love her friendships. IDK what to think about the investigation into how her powers actually work (real talk: i don't care how they work) but it does seem like it'll prob open up some interesting possibilities and not just because she's working with Bruno!
