The description of excrement made it an immediate hard stop for me.

I just was not gripped by the story.
The narrator was great. The story was not holding my attention. I felt no empathy for the MC and sadly decided not to keep reading it.

Two hundred and forty seven pages in and I have given up. This award winning book, my most anticipated read of 2023 is moving into the #readwithsabs DNF pile.
Why?
It was just not hitting the mark. Give me a character driven coming of age book anytime and it's likely to be a firm favourite or five star read. Not this one! 😳 Kingsolver's writing has failed to keep me captivated or compelled to read on. I could not, no matter how hard I tried get any enthusiasm to pick up the book and discover what happened next in Demon's troublesome and sad life.
It started so well, I was really enjoying the character setups each chapter short, sharp like novellas somehow as the book progressed, it lost my attention.
I actually feel relieved. I didn't want to give up. However, I now can dive into the rest of my May tbr.
This was to be my first book by Barbara Kingsolver, I've been highly recommended The Poisonwood Bible, and I do intend to give that one a go.
What a shame, such a stunning bookcover and sprayed edge book. One of my last purchases of 2022.

The plot was pretty weak.
Maddie was so basic and unworldly her thoughts and monologues made me roll my eyes or cringe.
I thought the book was poorly written and lacked depth.
Frankly, I cannot see what all the fuss is about!

I struggled to get into this book despite such a gripping book synopsis.
Super slow plot plus the narrator did not hold my attention at all.
It was dry. Super boring.
The book opens with far too much technical sailing jargon to describe and set the scene but I didn't care for it. It did not hook me at all.

I tried. It was borning and repetitive.
Narrator was fine it was just the story and main protagonist so incredibly annoying and dull. I just kept willing the story to get better and it wasn't. I had to stop listening and was glad when I did.
