While I appreciate the range of stories, many of them feel too short or rushed. I think this would have worked better as an anthology or even a set of novellas.

I loved this! The allegory of dealing with generational trauma and family secrets is wrapped in a queer story with a lot of heart.

This is my first interaction with Lorde's work and I loved this. Her essays and speeches are just as timely now as they were when she first delivered them. Her work feels timely and classy.

This is a stellar overview on the current issues surrounding racism and the discourse around it. I would call this a primer of sorts on the issue.

The second book in the series takes the world building from the first and expands it. Carl and Princess Donut start to develop a bond and we begin to see Carl struggle with the inability to save everyone. Th ending is literally explosive and was just enough of a cliff hanger to warrant me immediately grabbing the next book without feeling rushed or annoying.

Jones-Rogers does an excellent job of unearthing records and weaving together a history that few want to discuss. The book places the truth against the antebellum fog that the South has often preferred. It is a concise and information read, covering topics from the financial gain of slaveholding women to the way they treated the enslaved.
