If you didn’t read my previous review of Sleeping Giants, you absolutely should. As I mentioned there, I didn’t ever expect this series to steal my heart like it did, or my soul more accurately. After I finished “Sleeping Giants” I rushed to get this one on hold at my library.
When I started the audiobook back up, I remember being confused, because for some reason I couldn’t remember exactly why the cliffhanger was so crazy. However, a benefit to doing this book on audio is that the cast of characters was the same, so I was able to place the voices and immediately remember what happened before.
I have a habit of consistently not enjoying second books in series. I usually love first books because of the immersion into the world, and understanding how the world works. I tend to like third books because we’ve kind of gotten through the lull that happens in second books. This is mirrored in my TV watching too, most of the time third seasons of television shows are my favorites (Breaking Bad excluded). However, this book completely shattered this for me. This book was jam packed with action, and story and character development that I just want more more more.
I don’t want to go into too much detail on the plot of this book, except to say that it was more amazing than the first, and a wild wild ride. I highly recommend this series, and can’t get enough of it. I need the third one NOW!

I didn’t expect to fall in love with this book. I actually got the e-book and was highly uninterested. I really love epistolary books, and this book was actually all over Litsy (which I’m a huge fan of) and so I thought that it was a book I would immediately fall in love with. Like I said, I started with the e-book, and actually stopped reading. I heard though, that the audiobook was amazing, so I took a chance.
My favorite audiobook of all time is “World War Z”, but this is an extremely close second. It features a full cast, and it’s extremely immersive. There is a part where a character screams bloody murder for lack of a better word, and it felt so real, and so out of the blue I was shocked. I felt totally and completely immersed in this book. It isn’t awkward because you have two actors trying to do a whole cast of characters, each character has an extremely distinctive voice.
Rose Franklin falls into a hand when she’s young, and when she grows up she’s a scientist who is now in charge of the project of investigating the hand. And now, more body parts keep showing up. What is this giant? What does it do? Where is it from? She assembles a fantastic cast of characters, who Neuvel is able to write seamlessly.

I review books like this and hundreds of others on my blog Rachel's Reading. Check it out!
As is probably extremely evident at this point, I really love the Sammy Keyes series. It's so fun, and is a childhood favorite. I stopped reading at some point in my childhood, but am now returning to these as an adult, and find that they make me feel at home. I'm always astounded with the more adult topics that Van Draanen seems to handle with ease, that makes the adult and young reader equally entertained.
In this book, Sammy finds herself entwined in a mystery after meeting an old lady who tells her the story of Moustache Mary. Her cabin burns down, and there's a shiny new gas can near the fire. However the mystery just seems to start there. This book is full of old west family feuds, and honestly reminds me a lot of Holes by Louis Sachar in the same tone. Van Draanen does it again, and it does touch on some heavy subjects in the end. However, it's not done in such a heavy handed way that doesn't seem realistic, in fact, it seems very real, and age appropriate. Another job well done.

This book was mentioned on the following episodes of Checking Out:

Possible Read Harder 2020 Prompts: Last book in a series.
Possible Pop Sugar 2020 Prompts: Author has written more than 20 books, more than 20 letters in the title, 4 star rating on GoodReads
I grew up with these books, and put off finishing them for a long time. Sammy has seen me through elementary, middle and high school and now into adulthood. I was so scared of what the finale would entail, but it was truly beautiful and pulled every single heartstring I needed it to, and I 100% cried when it was over.

Full review to come but: this book was a solid three stars until the ending which earned it a high four, including the very last page with I think one of my new favorite quotes.
