Possible ReadHarder Prompts: Rural Setting
Possible PopSugar Prompts: Recommended by a podcast, 4 star GoodReads rating, More than 20 letter title.

I LOVE REE DRUMMOND I WANT HER TO BE MY BEST FRIEND. THANK YOU AND GOODNIGHT.

This book was mentioned on Episode 2 of Checking Out. Listen here!

Possible PopSugar Prompts: 3 word title, 20th century pub date, main character in their 20's, set in the 1920's.

Everyone was right, I should have read this when I was older and not in high school. Sad as hell, beautiful, but parts of it just didn't hold water with me, hence 4 instead of 5. Glad I gave it another chance though.

Possible ReadHarder Prompts: Mystery where the victim isn't a woman, Historical fiction that doesn't take place during World War 2
Possible PopSugar Prompts: Set in a city that hosted the Olympics, passes the Bechdel test, Upsidown image, published in my birthday month (April), Features a woman in STEM, bird on the cover, meant to read in 2019, title with more than 20 letters.

So I mean, if you want to read one book and have it knock out as many categories as humanly possible, here you go. I liked it in the beginning, and I followed it, until the mystery started to tie up in which case like..stuff happened I guess? I still fully don't understand the ending, and it's taken me a LONG time to get through a book that shouldn't have taken me this long. Flavia is cute, a 12 year old poison prodigy, and I found myself laughing along with her often. I wonder if maybe the reason this one falls flat is because it's the first. While I won't be diving right into the next one, I'll keep the door open.

Possible PopSugar Prompts: Set in a city that has hosted the Olympics, about a World Leader, By or about a Journalist, More than 20 letters in the title.

So I apparently went HARDCORE into Russia and Russia themes this year. Maybe it's the Russian heritage I have, who knows. Anyway, I had heard amazing things about this book and while it was really good and had tons of well-researched information, I find myself just..whelmed. Not over or under, simply whelmed. The story is told part biography, part memoir, and I find Gessen's voice so interesting and wonderful, and the more I listened to the audiobook the more astounded I became at Putin's rise to power. A very interesting book to be sure!

Possible Read Harder 2020 Prompts: Romance with a single parent
Possible Pop Sugar 2020 Prompts: 7 deadly sins, About a world leader, 3 word title, by or about a journalist, written more than 20 books, character in their 20s

So, adult romance is not my vibe but I had to read one to meet one of the prompts for Read Harder so I picked this one. It was...okay. Some of it seemed really strange and not romantic or sexy at all, and some of it just jumped around kind of crazy. It could also be this just isn't my genre, but I'm glad I finished it so I can check it off my list. Not sure I'll recommend it or ever return to it.

Truth be told this is totally a 3 star rating, but I gave it an extra star for being one of my childhood favorites. Strange how many overtly religious books I enjoyed (this one is only overtly because Queen Isabel was very Catholic) for growing up in a non religious family.
