This was such a fun book!! I won this ARC in a Goodreads giveaway, but got distracted with my need to finish Throne of Glass and The Dark Artifices before the last books came out. And now I regret waiting so long because this was a DELIGHT.

THE GOOD
The strong girl power vibes in this book are EVERYTHING and I won’t lie, they probably account for about 82% of my enjoyment. The #feminism comes in strong right from the very beginning and I loved it! It was so amazing seeing a group of smart, strong, sensitive women coming together to overcome adversity and lift each other up. YAS QUEENS.

There’s a core group of female characters that make this book really interesting and getting to know each one was really fun. The character arc for the main character Cala was my favorite to follow, but there’s also a character arc for the whole crew and it was super interesting to see how the two played off one another.
“Remember when they call you girl, they’re trying to tell you something. They’re trying to tell you that they’re more than you, that the body you’re in makes you less. But you know, and I know, that you’re exactly what you need to be.”
Plus, the main adventure and the action sequences in this are A+ and captured my attention from the very beginning. I’m so invested in these characters and their fate!! AND THAT ENDING!!!! Oh my god, I almost had a heart attack ya’ll. I was not prepared.
THE UGLY
I got so bored in the middle of this.

Cala and her best friend Pi get a lead on something they’ve been hoping and looking for for YEARS and I was so flipping excited to watch them set off on this quest to kick some ass. But they get pulled into some little side tasks that deflated my excitement balloon a little. I zoned out for long sections of audio and didn’t really miss anything. It all just felt like a way to prolong the ending. It REALLY picks up towards the end and makes it worth reading, but getting there was a bit of a snooze for me.
The romance felt like a second thought too. It was sort of just thrown in at the end and I’m torn between wishing it wasn’t part of the story at all and wanting more of it. Either would have made the book better I think. And there was a whole romance between two of the female crew members Hime and Amina that I was dying to see more of!!
I also was irrationally annoyed with Pisces??? Have you ever just read a character that annoys the crap out of you for no real reason? Because that’s what happened. Something about the way she was constantly defending the Bullet guy to Cala grated on me.
FINAL WORD
This was a SUPER fun book that made me explode with girl power!! If you’re looking for a fun pirate adventure, then this is a great one and I can’t wait for the next one!

God I’m just… *Wipes away tears* SOOOOOO happy to be in this universe again.

If I’m being honest, I was more than a little confused when this book started. I’ve always considered myself a huge Buffy fan, but I’m a huge fan of the show. I’ve never read any of the comics or given them much thought and I just assumed this would be focusing on the TV aspect of the fandom. I should have known better. I mean, I knew the comics were canon to the Buffverse, but when this book started I was so focused on the show that I got SUPER confused. I didn’t understand what the hell was going on. In chapter 2 or 3 there’s a bare bones explanation of events, but I still spent an ungodly amount of time on the Buffyverse wiki page. I wish there had been a fact page or something for people to reference because that would have come in handy.
To help others like me, here are some things to know going in:
➤ Nina and Artemis, the two main characters, are the daughters of Merrick Jamison-Smythe who was buffy’s first watcher before Giles and the start of the show. You can see his story in the Buffy MOVIE, which I highly recommend because it’s 90s cinema gold.
➤ This book is sandwiched somewhere in between season 8 and season 9 of the comics. Buffy had to destroy The Seed of Wonder to cut earth’s ties to hell dimensions and save the world, but this also destroyed ALL magic. Buffy eventually finds a way to restore The Seed of Wonder and bring magic back, but that hasn’t happened in this book yet.

Buffy smashing the crap out of the Seed of Wonder.
➤ Buffy now lives in San Francisco. I know this one seems stupid, but there are a bunch of little references to the Golden Gate Bridge that I didn’t understand until I learned this.
SO. Due to frequent Google search stops and too much over-thinking, it took me a while to get into this book. I was too busy over-analyzing how everyone connected together. Once I took a chill pill and made myself focus on the actual story, this was a fun read!
Kiersten White did an AMAZING job capturing the same Buffy vibes that were in the show. This book kind of plays out like it’s own spin-off episode, which I really appreciated. And her sense of humor was spectacular! I literally laughed out loud at this book several times.
And the characters are great!! Even though the cast is all new (besides a few awesome cameos 😉) they all fit right into the Buffyverse and I had a lot of fun getting to know each one. Cillian was my absolute FAVORITE. He had the best one liners and I wish he was a real person I could actually be friends with. I also loved the main character Nina and despite being almost half my age, I found her so completely relatable. She’s a strong character with a great sense of humor who’s just trying to navigate her way through life. Her mother and sister, on the other hand, I absolutely HATED. I cannot tell you how many times I wanted to strangle each of them, especially Artemis who spends most of the book being over protective, pushing Nina aside, and discounting her opinions. I could understand her motivations, but as someone who’s been on the receiving end of that kind of treatment, I had NO patience for it.

But don’t let that stop you! Once the story gets going it’s really great and I loved all the action and fighting and creatures and drama. It was all so Buffy *tears up* I can’t wait to dive into the next one to see where this story goes.
FINAL WORD
I was confused at first and it took me a while get into the story, but once I did it was AWESOME.

I should start this by saying I am a HUGE fan of Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices series. So when I read a description for this book that promised it would satisfy Cassandra Clare fans, I OBVIOUSLY jumped on it. In the beginning I wasn’t sure what to expect, but by the end I was a transformed Shadowlander fangirl. I was promised satisfaction and can report that I am definitely SATISFIED.

THE REHASH
Sachi Manning is an average girl living her life in Melbourne, Australia. She’s just graduated with her best friends Olivia and Gabe and can feel the endless freedom ahead of her as they prepare for a trip across Europe. So naturally, that’s when Gabe gets killed, leaving Sachi and her friends shattered. And Gabe isn’t the only one—there have been a string of similar murders that humans are blaming on a serial killer, but the supernatural know better.
Fast forward six months and Sachi is getting through life one day at a time, living with her brother Nikko, and working at a local cafe. At night she has terrible nightmares that make sleeping hard, but she’s getting by. Out of the blue one day, she starts noticing things she never has before. One of the bartenders has tiny horns, a server is running around with pointy ears, and there’s a guy walking around Melbourne with a Doctor Who, Willy Wonka vibe. Trying not to think too much about these strange sightings, Sachi lets her friends talk her into going out to a club for the first time in months. While she’s there, she just happens to see Julian—Doctor Willy Wonka himself—with a freaking SCYTHE about to slice up Gabe, the guy that’s suppose to ALREADY BE DEAD.
This brings Sachi, Julian, and his partner Moss together on a quest to find out what Sachi really is and discover how people like Gabe keep turning up “dead” when they’re not suppose to. All the while, an acquaintance (co-worker?????) of Julian and Moss named Griffin lurks in the background, scheming and making his own plans for Sachi Manning.
THE UGLY
When I first started reading this, my inner fangirl was so full of The Mortal Instruments that the parallels between the two stories blinded me like a sharp laser beam to the eye. I was worried that there might be too many similarities. A sassy, strong girl with an amazing talent for drawing? Two brothers-from-another-mother that are red hot with amazing fighting skillz (that’s right, WITH A Z!!)? An entire hidden realm of mythical creatures that dumb humans don’t even know exist?
Plus, I admit that I was a tad overwhelmed in the beginning. We are literally just dumped right in the middle of an entire fantastical world with a lot of terms and characters I kept forgetting two pages later.
THE GOOD
HOWEVER. It only took me a few chapters to realize that this novel is completely in a world of it’s own. I thought the universe this book takes place in was very well thought out, complete with it’s own geography, rules, key players, and history. That’s why I was so overwhelmed at the start, but once Sachi comes along and we discover it with her, everything makes a lot more sense. Plus, being overwhelmed with information at the beginning kind of made the story more believable. If there really WAS a hidden mythical universe that I randomly and suddenly discovered (PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN. DRAGONS AND UNICORNS IN MY LIFE WOULD BE GREAT), I would probably be really confused about it. Know what I mean? No? Okay moving on…
I also really SUPER FELL IN LOVE WITH THE CHARACTERS. Moss is just THE BEST and I wish I could watch the Vampire Diaries with him in real life. Sachi has a lot of spunk that was awesome to see in a female protagonist, despite the fact she frustrated me from time to time. And Julian. JULIAN. UGH. Similar to Jace Lightwood, I simultaneously want to hug and strangle Julian. So OBVIOUSLY that means I’m #OBSESSED with him now.
And this book is freakin’ funny! It’s filled to the brim with amazing humor and pop culture references that I really appreciated. It kept me engaged and I WANT MORE! When I was thumbing through the first few introductory pages, I knew I was in for a treat when I glanced at the table of contents. Here’s a sampling of my favorite chapter titles:
• “A Knee to the Groin is Always a Safe Bet”
• “All the Librarians Are High”
• “Who Doesn’t Love a Good Cat Gif?”
• “Cue Dawson Ugly Cry”
• “Why it’s Important to Always Keep Someone Else’s Dried Blood on Hand”
• “Don’t Do Drugs—You’ll Wake Up in a White Cell With the Whole World Thinking You’re Dead”
The jokes in this book gave me strong Buffy the Vampire Slayer vibes and I loved it. That’s like, the highest compliment I can give!

FINAL WORD
This book is a tad overwhelming in the beginning and has some strong parallels to the The Mortal Instruments, but I really loved this. It’s a hilarious, fun read that I would TOTALLY recommend!

This book was cute!

I’ve been burned by so many awful romance novels that I go into each one with low expectations as a general rule. And now, thanks to Audible’s optional romance package, I’ve been putting this to the test more than normal. I randomly stumbled into this under Audible’s “shifter” category and was pleasantly surprised!
Seven Years wasn’t mind blowing or anything, but Austin was totally adorable and is pretty much the reason why I liked this as much as I did. The background characters were a lot of fun too, which means I’ll definitely be continuing this series because I’m curious to see what happens. Lexi was pretty good and I didn’t completely hate her, which was nice. She made a couple questionable decisions, but I thought her character was cool and a little spunky.
And the narrator of the audiobook was surprisingly good! I don’t know what I was expecting exactly, but I thought she did a marvelous job narrating and providing individual voices for everyone.
FINAL WORD
Well, I didn’t completely hate this book. So there’s that. And the romance was cute enough for me to continue the series!

DENVER AND MAIZY. DENVER AND MAIZY!!! Gah!! I've been waiting for this pairing since Denver's loco wolf protected little Maizy from her father in book one. They're just SO GOD DAMN CUTE my heart can't handle it. And since I've been impatiently waiting for this ship for SIX BOOKS it's not very surprising that I was a tad underwhelmed. SIGH.

It's my own fault, I shouldn't have built it up so much in my head. But what I didn't like about this was how inconsistent and random it felt. Similar to the other books, a TON of crazy shit happens. Don't get me wrong, I love the insane drama, but there wasn't really anything connecting everything together.
But no. Apparently everything just happened at the same time coincidentally?? And after soooo much build up about Maizy being a rare "potential" that they had to keep a secret at all costs, it had shockingly little to do with the plot??? There wasn't nearly as much drama around this damn birthmark as I thought there would be and it left me a little confused.
All that crap aside, I really did like this book. Watching Denver and Maizy's relationship grow was SO FRIGGIN' ADORABLE. You'd think it would be a little weird, or even creepy given the circumstances, but it wasn't. Watching Denver struggle with his feelings made it easier to accept and understand because we take the journey with him.
FINAL WORD
Eh, this one was just okay for me. I love Denver and Maizy, but didn't like the story as much as some of the others.

#FebsCursedKiss Buddy Read 2019
Format: Paperback
Overall Rating: 3 Stars
Our #FebsCursedKiss buddy read is going swimmingly and yesterday was the start of book two, which means it’s review time! And this was, ugh... Wow. I don't know, I'm so confused about it. Half of me absolutely loved this and the other half wanted to light it on fire.

THE GOOD
My thoughts are so jumbled, I need to break this down. Let's start with what I liked.
First of all, I thought the writing was beautiful! I really love Rutkoski’s style and her use of metaphors and descriptions. There were so many moments that I had to stop and pause to write stuff down. It was great.
Overall I really loved the beginning half of this book. All of the slave talk made me squirm at first, but I could tell early on that this was going to be one of the main conflicts and I was ready to see these slaves rise up and fight back. And at first I really loved how Rutkoski structured the plot and built the tension. The perspectives would switch between Kestrel who was different than most Valorians but completely oblivious to the brewing revolution, and Arin who was secretly planning some kind of revolt that we don’t get all the details on. Arin’s secrets are revealed to us a little bit at a time and I was so into it. I couldn’t read the pages fast enough and was dying to know MORE.

And despite everything, I actually really like the individual characters and can sympathize with both of them. Kestrel is AMAZING and I kind of have a girl crush on her. She’s so smart and cunning with a quiet kind of strength I really admire. Any time she would outwit someone (which was often) I wanted to fist pump. Even during the end when shit was GOIN DOWN I felt for her and could understand her motivations. And Arin is a man who had everything taken away from him and wants to free his people! I admire them both.
THE UGLY
*Lets out a long breath* Okay. Where do I even start?
When this book hits the halfway mark, it goes from 0 to 60 in like, A PAGE. I got whiplash this plot spun around so fast. One carriage scene and BAM, EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT. I wasn’t really shocked at the turn of events? But oh my god, could we have eased into it a little more??

And when I said I like the characters individually, I meant it. I love Arin and I love Kestrel, but their relationship together gets SO WEIRD and I was in a constant state of pissed off reading the last half. Arin wants his freedom and to free his people. Since he was a freaking SLAVE this shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, but somehow Kestrel is just SO SHOCKED by the whole thing? And Kestrel basically gets claimed as property and held prisoner, so of course she’s gonna be pissed off. But Arin is so confused by her anger, like she should be thankful she’s being held under house arrest. Guys, literally NOTHING that’s happening is shocking. Why are you both so flabbergasted at each other????
Plus, they share ONE KISS and Arin is just hopelessly devoted and in love with Kestrel???? So despite all the tension over a freaking WAR and Kestrel being held prisoner, there are still some weird romantic moments? But they were so randomly thrown in and don’t help their relationship progress AT ALL. Someone would get stabbed, or kestrel would try to run away, but then they would get all flirty while baking pastries and shit. It was soooooo weird.
If felt like too much time was spent in the beginning laying down groundwork, which shoved ALL of the plot to the back. Arin and Kestrels relationship REALLY needed more time to ease into the passion they felt for each other because it just didn’t make sense to me.
FINAL WORD
I’m here for the characters and I’m actually curious to see how this mess plays out, so I’m still continuing the series, but this first book wasn’t the best.

What. The actual. F*ck. This book is I-N-S-A-N-I-T-Y. I’m pretty sure Armentrout took every episode of Maury Povich and shoved them all into a 400 page book.

But I’ll be damned if I didn’t somehow end up loving this??? I don’t even know who I am anymore. All I know is, this book is filled to brim with DRAMA and I am 100% here for it. There’s kidnappings, murders, forbidden love, illegitimate children, comas, suicides, ghosts, and so much more. You guys don’t even know. My head is still spinning and I need a drink. Don’t let the low key beginning of the book fool you, the ending of this thing packs a punch.
And all of this may sound cliche and ridiculous, which it absolutely is, but Armentrout is a genius because I am HOOKED. I gotta keep reading these books to solve the mysteries and find out who the killer is. I JUST HAVE TO.
Also, side note: I was really digging the performances from the two narrators and loved the southern accents they did for everyone!
FINAL WORD
