This story starts off with a man, who is the bread winner of his family, waking up to find that he is now a human sized insect. This story touches on societal expectations and how people respond when you no longer are “useful” to them. The family is left having to look after Gregor and in the process starts to resent and even hate him and his presence in their lives as they saw it was a burden on them. The dehumanization of Gregor at the hands of his family led to the inevitable death of himself. Even in the last few sentences of the story, the father and mother looked to their daughter and thought it was time to make use of her and marry her off to someone preferably rich. Yet another example of how transactional they viewed their relationships with their children. Before when Gregor was providing for the family, he was a respected man and everyone in the household benefitted from his hard work without having to work themselves. Once Gregors role in their life changed, so did their respect for him. Gregors metamorphosis into an insect can also be a metaphor for disabilities and sicknesses and speaks on how society fails people who are most vulnerable in an ableist society built on economic productivity and individualism. It also emphasizes that even people who are thought to be good can be swayed to be cruel to people they love if fear and resentment drives them in that direction. Overall I really enjoyed this and even went on a deep dive on YouTube to understand it better.

This was so brutal. Definitely check the trigger warnings before diving in being this centers around 6 year olds. Enzo was literally the child from hell.

This was entertaining and shocking. I’m not sure exactly how I feel about the end but overall I enjoyed the story.

While I thought it was action packed and read like an action movie, I just wasn’t interested in the characters enough to continue. Might come back to it at a later date.

This was such a beautiful story. I sobbed like a baby at the end of it 🥺 Touches a lot on grief and dealing with the death of loved ones.

I’m surprised how much I actually enjoyed this. Rowan was such a heart throb and the spicy scenes were SPICYY. I will say it kind of dragged towards the end but I still thought it was a great dark romance read. The killing scenes and serial killer aspect of the story really kept my attention as well. I’m curious to see how Leather & Lark plays out.

After watching the movie, I had to read the book to get more information. Loved the story and excited to continue the series.

I felt a lot of things reading this but overall it’s going to be a story that I’ll remember for a long time. Another review said “Convenient Store Woman walked so Earthlings could run” and I absolutely agree with this statement. Also, I don’t ever want to hear about the Stone Age again lol 🙄

This was such a great listen! Everything starts off quickly and the ending was satisfying and brought the story around full circle.

Full of teen angst and funny. There’s a bit of commentary that is a bit dated but it speaks to the time it was written (late 90s). I see why younger me loved borrowing this series from the library :3
