Holy shit, I hate Kat. I hate Kat so much I liked Evangeline better. I actually wanted Evangeline and Taylor to work it out. Kat is annoying, hypocritical to the point you'll tear your hair out, and...annoying. The only time I liked her is when she was sorting out her gay feelings, which was well written. She's an ass to Galen, who honestly wasn't as bad as she made him out to be, and she's holier than thou.
The murder mystery in this comes too late in the book and is solved too quick.
There is a part where Galen describes how it's "not as bad as it sounds" that his White British colonizer dad spent years pursuing his Indian mom and I cringed reading it.
The only time I enjoyed this book was from Taylors perspective. Her conflict with authority and her self loathing were interesting to read, especially her messed up relationship with Evangeline, and she was the least stupid of the two solving this mystery.

This book gave a lot good information about something I'd never seen discussed much, which is German POWs held in America and the struggle Black Americans went through just to serve the country. I wasn't a fan of the writing style and felt like some information was repeated so many times to pad the book. Maybe needed another round of editing.

patton and lena <3
this book would have been 4 stars if not for the way too obvious plot hole (for lack of a better term) that was left in just for more hijinks. I liked learning about a different preserve, and the new characters introduced. Plus Seth is catching up to Kendra in terms of cool powers.
