I really liked the first book in this series Icebound but was not feeling this one as much. The characters were not very likable, and the dialogue was overall pretty cheesy. I really didn't like how heavily they leaned into the Southern accents/phrasing like maam/sir/darlin/sugar, but I am not from the south so maybe it really is like that...

Although they were childhood friends, it did feel a little insta-lovey, which I wasn't a huge fan of. For some reason, I felt the chemistry more with the FMC's best friend and the bartender! I would consider picking up that book, since I enjoyed their banter.

I think overall it was a quick read, but it wasn't for me! Given I liked Icebound quite a bit, I wouldn't be opposed to picking up more of this author's books.

Thank you to NetGalley and Atria for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

LOVED this. It was really similar to Dawn of the Onyx, but so much better!

Pros:
- I really loved Diem’s relationship with her father and brother; it was really sweet.
- I really liked Luther. I’m a huge fan of slow burn so loved that it was drawn out and not instalove-y at all
-
LOVED when he took care of her after she went back into the building. Love a good caretaking scene. I think it was especially special and sweet since she is the healer so is typically the caregiver.

 Cons:
- Slow start for sure. A lot of build up and world building to grasp.
- I actually could stab Henri with a blade and not GAF.
like when he volunteered her to go into the castle to spy?!?!?! Like are you an idiot! You literally don’t care about her. Disgusting

 - Can we pls pick a different manly power other than shadow daddy powers pls

Ending:
so I’m an idiot and definitely didn’t see the end coming like her being the queen. I totally called her mom being alive but am super interested as to WHERE she is. I do want to learn more about the Descended and their court politics. Also excited to see more LUTHER!
