Synopsis: Born into violence, Tyler knew nothing of his birth. Kurt and Amelia raised Tyler as their own, keeping the circumstances of Tyler’s conception and birth a secret. After believing Kurt and Amelia were his real parents, once reaching the age of thirteen, Tyler felt he was different from other vampires and that something wasn’t right, which was later revealed as his past unraveled.
At Redwood, a school for vampires, witches, and wizards, Tyler’s best friends were Max, a vampire, and Emma, a witch, who’d both grown to care so much about Tyler as years went by. They were inseparable, but even they knew nothing of what Tyler really was.
Tyler soon found out how different he really was as secrets came from out the shadows and into the light, leaving Kurt and Amelia no choice but to tell Tyler about the dreadful day he was born. That’s when he hears about the prophecy foretelling that he could be the True Alpha, the true leader of worlds, the one who could unite every supernatural from not only their world but from different realms as well.
Now, tragedy leads Tyler on a journey to find out the truth, but first, he must learn to control his newfound gift.
Review: Overall, I thought this was a good book. The characters were engaging. The storyline was unique, albeit borrowed from Star Wars a bit. The book also did well to make the plot intriguing.
However, I do feel like the world building wasn’t as detailed as it could have been and that the pacing was too fast in my opinion. The book is also incredibly small and could have been expanded upon.
Verdict: it was a good book!

Synopsis: Broken Branches is the first in the supernatural fictional YA series, Silver Lining.
Broken Branches is set in London England, Kensington. It follows Kris through his beautiful and privileged life as everything is ripped from him bit by bit. When he realises that he is left with nothing real in his life, his days become dull and monotone bringing about in him a state of mental autopilot. Deep down he ends up blaming himself for the tragedies that have occurred over the past few years, which doesn’t help his state of mind. A beautiful supernatural miracle helps him to uncover the honesty of not just his actions, but of those around him. When he begins to open up and apply intentions and actions to parts of his life that he used to question, aspects of his world begin to light up and unravel. Magical forces show him the truth about what life is and where happiness truly lays; it reminds him to be thankful for just simply being in the world.
Broken Branches presents grandeur, realism, profound relationships, genuine love, simplicity and opulence. This is sprinkled with airy supernatural quirks that also bring about a humour in the form of classic British sarcasm and vivid colour.
Review: Overall, I liked this book. It was a good story about communication and love. The characters were well developed, the world building was also well done. The book was also well written! I really enjoyed reading this one!
However, I did get a little lost because the book is non-linear. While there are dates and such, it’s a little hard to keep track of.
Verdict: It was a great read!

Synopsis: True love knows no boundaries, it sees no color, even if that love is forbidden. Believing that got Eden’s mom, Echo killed at the age of sixteen, and the identity of Eden’s father was one of many secrets she took to the grave. Instead of moving on, Echo’s soul moved in. With her mother’s presence in her body, Eden can feel Echo’s emotions and hear her thoughts. When Eden tells, pseudo father, Uncle Daryl, about the voice in her head, it takes her down a road that leads to a diagnosis of multiple personalities. Now at seventeen, Eden has a secret love affair of her own with Drew. If Uncle Daryl ever found out the consequences would rip them apart, but that’s the least of Eden’s problems. As new clues surface surrounding her father’s identity, Eden finds herself on a dangerous path that could answer her paternity questions and the mysteries of her mother’s death, but at what cost? Eden can feel the weight of the secrets Echo keeps from her—secrets that have Echo’s killer returning after seventeen years with a mind to make history repeat itself.
Review: For the most part I thought this was a well done book. The world building was well done and the writing was well done. I thought the characters were also well developed for the most part. The book is suspenseful and full of mystery that kept me wanting to know more.
However, I did feel like the book was very slow and if you’re an impatient reader like I am sometimes then this book will test your patience. I also felt like the book was a bit muddy with the plot. It was kind of unclear of what direction the book was going a lot of times and even the blurb is a bit too chaotic.
Verdict: Pretty good suspense.

Publisher: P-Wave Press
Pages: 298
Synopsis: John is a trauma doctor recovering at a glamorous Mediterranean resort after losing his wife in a terrible accident. Lost and alone, he wanders the streets, trying to escape his pain and drifting into alcoholism.
He ends up in a seedy strip joint, where he meets Jasna, a brilliant and beautiful hostess. Against their better judgement, they become infatuated and begin to fall in love.
When she is brutally killed, John is the only suspect. After he is mysteriously let go by the police, Charles, the hotel manager, reveals that Jasna’s death is far from an isolated incident, and he recently lost his granddaughter, Erin, in similar circumstances.
Seeking to clear John’s name and obtain justice from Jasna and Erin, they are pitched into a ruthless world of people-trafficking, prostitution, drugs and murder, where life is cheap and nothing is as it seems.
Will they gather the evidence in time to stop the killers, or be their next victims? Can they trust the police, or are they part of the corruption reaching into every part of life?
Escape is the debut novel by L. A. Davenport, plunging you into a darkly glamorous world where John has to overcome his grief to avenge Jasna, Erin and the victims of modern slavery.
Review: Overall, this was an ok book. The book had fairly good character development and a heart-wrenching story. For the most part it was enjoyable and the book was well done.
However, I thought the book was a bit too long for me and the book wasn’t as much of a mystery as I would have liked it. The “demon” inside of our main character didn’t really come into play either, which was disappointing, and the plot got a bit stale especially towards the end.
Verdict: It was an ok book!

Synopsis: One City remains after the world collapsed, protected by a wall, controlled by a system. After all, how can you keep the peace without a system? It’s the system that feeds you, that protects you; it's the system that keeps life simple and clean. Without it, all would be lost. The laws, however few, are responsible for your safety, they’re necessary to keep people alive; it's the law that keeps the system running. If you break the law, you break the system, and the punishment for that is exile.
What happens when you exile all the law breakers, murders, thieves, to a world where chaos is King? They survive. They remember.
Nicolas is just like everyone, he obeys the system, he follows the law. All he wants is a simple life, and like everyone he was about to get it. But unlike everyone, he betrayed the City—at least, that's what they say.
The truth? The City is under attack, their wall has been breached and traitors wander their streets. Now it’s Nic’s mission to stop them from within. But what happens when you send a normal boy into exile with an enemy who has a score to settle? He learns to survive. He bows to the King and embraces chaos.
But he's a sheep in a wolf’s skin. And how can a sheep defeat an army of wolves?
Review: For the most part this was a good book. The book had an interesting plot and that’s what really kept me going throughout the book. The characters were also pretty well developed.
However, the book really needs a few more rounds of editing and it could use some more world building. The book was also confusing and didn’t make sense at some parts. I think building up the world and editing could really help with that.
Verdict: It was ok, but needs work.

Synopsis: The kingdom of Hálendi is in trouble. It's losing the war at its borders, and rumors of a new, deadlier threat on the horizon have surfaced. Princess Jennesara knows her skills on the battlefield would make her an asset and wants to help, but her father has other plans.
As the second-born heir to the throne, Jenna lacks the firstborn's--her brother's--magical abilities, so the king promises her hand in marriage to the prince of neighboring Turia in exchange for resources Hálendi needs. Jenna must leave behind everything she has ever known if she is to give her people a chance at peace.
Only, on the journey to reach her betrothed and new home, the royal caravan is ambushed, and Jenna realizes the rumors were wrong--the new threat is worse than anyone imagined. Now Jenna must decide if revealing a dangerous secret is worth the cost before it's too late--for her and for her entire kingdom.
Review: Overall this book was pretty good. I thought the character development was well done and the book is evenly paced. I liked the author’s interpretation on fantasy set reads and I liked the character descriptions.
However, I did feel like that book is weirdly wrote. Not only did it take me a long time to get into the book, the book has some very weird moments, like when a murderer is on the loose so the royal family leaves… but also leaves two of their family alone. It was very weird! The book also lacked in world building.
Verdict: It was good, just weird.

Recommended For...: sci-fi, feminist, dystopian
Publication Date: February 17, 2020
Genre: Sci-Fi Feminist
Recommended Age: 16+ (sexism and TW for mentions/illusions of sexual abuse)
Publisher: Vamptasy Publishing
Pages: 166
Synopsis: New London: 2067
Britain struggles to rebuild after the crushing devastation of the Great Flood.
Those in power have formed a new regime in the wake of the disaster. Whether it is a hard-won utopia or an oppressive nightmare depends entirely on gender. Unmarried women have no legal rights or protection, and their access to education and employment is limited to ensure their servitude. Yet a fire burns within them to prove they are far from the weaker sex, and their rebellion seeks to tear down the patriarchal rule.
Cerys and Gloria have very different dreams, but a common enemy. Joining an underground alliance, they discover a group of scientists in possession of a weapon powerful enough to change society forever.
Their radical solution is not without great risk. Failure means death or imprisonment. Success could land them in a seat of authority, over a society that loathes them, without the requisite skills to thrive.
Review: Overall, I thought this book was well done! The character development was amazing and I loved the world building. The plot kept me intrigued from start to finish and I was rooting for Cerys and Gloria throughout the novel. I also thought the writing was superb!
The only issue I had was that I thought the pacing was too fast for me. The book is 166 pages and is super short, so you gotta pay attention to get all the details.
Verdict: Definitely recommend!

Synopsis: Where knights and dragons once marched for honor at the behest of the Good King, nothing remains but sad and broken lore about the glory of the old rule. Now, titles of nobility are only christened by the spilling of blood and the destruction of everything linked to the old ways under the Order of the Black King. Even so, some still stand who are not easily dissuaded...
In the small forest village of Ark, Kalos has lived alone with his father for as long as he can remember. After a strange encounter at the exotic Mercari Fair, which arrives only once a year, the two of them must immediately depart for the port city of Blefcynn. A mysterious collection of items is urgently required by his Father, but even Kalos may be unable to learn why.
Kalos must conquer overwhelming obstacles while rapidly evolving from the boy he thought he was to a man he never expected to become throughout his journey. Despite having received many years of combat and weapons training while under his Father's care, war, pirates and unyielding foes threaten to crush him around every corner in this first installment of the Draguntome saga.
Review: Another DNF at 24%. The book isn’t bad. It’s quite interesting story wise and I liked the fantasy elements, but there’s a LOT going on in this book and the plot is very slow. The book sets up for an epic series, but at this time I’m not in a place to be set up for that.
Verdict: It’s good, just not for me.
