Synopsis: Amelia is an orphan girl who lost her parents at a young age and grew up in the woods. Her animal friends are her only family. Years later, when two strangers stumble into the forest, her life is turned upside down. She becomes friends with the strangers and embarks on a quest to save their parents. Amelia’s resilience is put to the test. Will she be able to be the protector of the forest, or will she put it in harm’s way? Will she abandon her humanity or find a way to connect back to the human world?

Review: Overall, I think this was a good first book. The plot is interesting and the mood of the book is well done. I admire for such a young author for writing this book!

However, I think the pacing is a bit too slow for me and the book has some story issues. The world and the characters aren't as developed as I would like them to be. I also think the writing overall could use some work, but it’s a great book for a beginning author.

Verdict: It’s a good first book!

Synopsis: [The crippled god of metallurgy, fire, and alchemy has many names and many faces—sometimes Hephaestus, Ptah, or Vulcan. He changes to suit his needs. And just like his names, his creations have gone through countless revisions. This time, he’s finally onto something—his Automata have turned the heads of other gods. They’ve noticed their pre-programmed potential. There’s a reason Vulcan didn’t scrap the Automata—a reason he left them in the care of humans all this time. They were just the beta testers for his most intricate windup toy yet…

Vulcan’s ancient Automata find their purpose rebooted in the second installment of the CIRCO DEL HERRERO/THE BLACKSMITH’S CIRCUS series. Their immortal human Masters will drop like flies—superfluous in the next round as the gods shuffle in a new deck of fateful cards. The Masters can choose how and when, but they will all die to free the Automata of their earthly chains. Odys and his Automaton, Maud, struggle to protect his twin sister from the plotting of his dual-bodied adversaries. But his sister, Odissa, finds herself a willing participant in The Blacksmith’s latest exhibition—could she be the missing cog to the god’s tightly wound machine all along?

Review: For the most part this was a good sequel. The characters were well developed and the story was just as intriguing, but I had to dnf it at over halfway through because I couldn't get into the story. It wasn't for me, but it was definitely good and would be good for some people.

Verdict: DNF for me but maybe not for you!

Book: Awaken the Three

Rating: 4/5

Recommended For...: fantasy lovers, ya readers

Publication Date: August 11, 2020

Genre: YA Fantasy

Recommended Age: 16+ (violence, gore, death, war)

Publisher: Indigo River

Pages: 546

Synopsis: Beyond the Wastes of Khulakorum, a storm is rising . . .

The Shaper of Ages is gone, and along with her, the Breaker-yet gods are not the only threat to the peace of the living.

Aldis Tennech, the once-great general of the armies of Gal'dorok, finds himself in exile. His only hope of reclaiming glory lies in the hands of a self-proclaimed emperor, and the unearthly powers that put him there. Meanwhile, improbable alliances are forged in the north as unexpected enemies rear their heads and threaten ruin-with a single thread in common, connecting them all.

In the sequel to his award-winning novel Gift of the Shaper, D. L. Jennings once again brings to life an epic tale of war and chaos as earthly armies fight for otherworldly prizes. Ancient powers lying dormant must be called upon, bringing strength to those who need it and conquest to those who seek it; battles will rage and cities will fall, but only the most desperate or reckless would seek . . .

. . . to awaken the three.

Review: I think the author did well with the sequel. I enjoyed this book more than I did the first one and I think the author did well advancing the plot and continuing the world building.

However the pacing continues to be a problem for me in this series and I also felt that the characters weren't as well developed in this book as they were in the first one.

Verdict: It was really good!

Rick Fellows, the detective assigned to the case, discovers a secret the couple was hiding. A secret so destructive the detective will risk his career in getting to the truth.

Review: The book is good, but the book has a lot of errors with it and it’s oddly written. I couldn’t figure out who the I is and why we were doing what we were. The character development was also non-existent for me. The book is also only 10 pages long and it’s really too short for the genre it’s in. The book needs to be further developed.

Verdict: Not for me, but maybe for you!

Synopsis: “Why did they kidnap me? I’m not rich. I don't have a lot of family to extort. I have certainly not been a police officer long enough to make any enemies. But instead of waking to the incessant ringing of my alarm clock back in my small city apartment, I awoke in the dirt. In the jungle. Naked. What is happening? Where are their demands?

Then I found her; beautiful and graceful, without a mark to show for her life trapped here. Wherever here is. How did she survive in this jungle? In fact, how is she keeping me alive? 14 days now, she has hunted, caught, cooked and provided without ever saying a word. She has listened to everything I’ve said, but never responds. Is she in on it? Am I in some weird experiment, or is it all a dream? But it can’t be a dream, because I keep having terrible nightmares. About bright lights, and pain, and figures at my door their voices in my head. Of jumping off cliffs, being eaten by monsters and hanging myself. How can you have such vivid nightmares inside a dream?

Then there is the X, tattooed on my head. Who kidnaps someone and then tattoos an X on their forehead? What’s it all mean? I’ve had enough! Tomorrow I’m taking control and repaying my debt to this girl. Tomorrow I escape.”
Review: Another book I had to DNF. The book is interesting, but it’s weirdly written and the world building isn’t well done in my opinion. The book also has issues with character development.

Verdict: Not for me, but maybe for you!

My name is Violet Webb. I live in a small town that nearly worships Halloween but I hate it. I can't wait until I graduate and get as far as I can from that silliness.

Now what?

Some bloody lady of Fate gave me a prophecy to get home. The only problem is that I must defeat the darkness before it swallows both of our worlds.

Can I go through without making the ultimate sacrifice?

However, I did feel like the book was too slow and the world building could have been better.

Verdict: It was good, just needs work.

Synopsis: Spring Break is supposed to be a time of fun and new beginnings.

After defeating the Darkness, Violet and I thought we could just spend some time together and revel in our relationship with our friends in the Blessed Realm.

A figure from my past comes back with a message, putting Violet’s life at risk.

Will I be able to protect my girl, along with the realm that I call home? Or will blood prove to my undoing?

Review: This book was so short, so it’s a quick read if you’re into this series and want a little more. The book didn’t have time to character development or world build like I would have wanted it to, but the book was well written and it had a lot of great plot moments that connected well with the rest of the series.

Verdict: It was good, just needs work.

Book: The Countdown

Synopsis: In the Grand Alliance of American States… Your days are numbered.

I’m Theo, and my deathday is in ten days.

The vivid, poison-green digits burning into my left wrist won’t let me forget it.

But when I receive a mysterious parting gift from the Government, I’m thrown into a wild hunt for a clue that could explain deathdays. Or stop them.

With time running out, every choice I make could be my last…

The Countdown is the addictive full-length prequel to the young adult dystopian series The Deathday Chronicles. Full of action, adventure, romance and heroes in unexpected places, it’s perfect for fans of The Hunger Games, Divergent and The Maze Runner.

The countdown is on.

Review: For the most part I really enjoyed it! It had an early 2000s dystopian feel to it that I still really love. The romance was cute and I loved the progression of it. The world building was fairly well done and the character development was the strongest point of the book. I also really liked the premise of it.

However, I did think that the book felt like I had already read it. I don’t mean that it was plagerized, but that the idea was not something new to me and had already been done before. While I really enjoy plots like this, I did want to see more.

Verdict: Very well done book and I’m excited for the series.

Publisher: Indie Published

Pages: 418

Synopsis: A world descending into war; a fabled healer who might be their last, best hope; and a princess imprisoned in a dragon-guarded keep.

Lynette sets out with Baxter and Eirlon in search of a healer: the fabled Medicine Man of Horru. It is a desperate gamble to revive the fae king and avert a larger war.

But the route they take will prove perilous. They risk losing everything, even each other, in a world gone mad with the stirrings of war. Armies have gathered on the borders of the Feyfell - lured by legends of fae wealth. With King Elyan poisoned and unconscious, the kingdom is visible, and vulnerable to outside invaders for the first time in centuries. And while the fae nobles debate rules of succession, Princess Elise remains missing.

For in a tower a world away, the fae princess is held captive, surrounded by armies and a dragon chained to the will of vengeful sorceress. Drained of her magic, Elise must plot her own escape - while a new breed of assassins hunts the mage-turned-swordsman named Garth. Werewolves prowl the land again, as all alike seek to strike their bargains before the oncoming war.

Will it be too much for Lynette to bear? Can she survive the loss of so much she holds dear? And if she does, will she ever be the same? For who among them would dare ascend, to retrieve hope from a dragon-guarded keep.

Review: I really liked this book! I thought the author greatly improved in writing from the first two books and the plot and story benefitted so much from that growth. The character development and world building was also so much better.

However, there’s still a lot of work to do and I think another round of editing and filling in the story and developing side characters would make the story much much better.

Verdict: I think this is a good story!
