While this isn't exactly a yuri, it can still be interpreted as a romance between Hina and Kanae. Whether it's platonic or romantic according to the reader, this is a cute manga about admiration. Even if Nawoko stated this isn't a yuri, it is hard to not think there might one day be a romantic relationship between Hina and Kanae.
Reading this now with what's going on is different than reading it in 2014. At that time, it seemed so impossible, but now, with Trump and his misogynistic and racist cabinet, a future like this sounds possible. And that is terrifying.
This was a very honest book about life in Puerto Rico and later, life in Brooklyn, New York. It is sad that Santiago struggles to consider herself American because of her skin color. I believe that anyone who lives in America is American. I could relate to when she had to interpret for her mother, as I too interprete for my mom sometimes. Santiago's writing is good and anyone who is an immigrant, or knows someone who is an immigrant, should read this.
I really, really enjoyed this sensationalism novel. It took me a long time to finish it because I didn't want to say goodbye to Richard Marwood, Jabez North, Mr Peters, Valerie de Cevennes, and the rest of the entertaining cast of characters.
