When I Was Puerto Rican
by Esmeralda Santiago
This was a very honest book about life in Puerto Rico and later, life in Brooklyn, New York. It is sad that Santiago struggles to consider herself American because of her skin color. I believe that anyone who lives in America is American. I could relate to when she had to interpret for her mother, as I too interprete for my mom sometimes. Santiago's writing is good and anyone who is an immigrant, or knows someone who is an immigrant, should read this.
