So here is a thought experiment. What if we were to regard every object in our material environment, whatever its cost, with the same set of attitudes that we bring to a much-hugged teddy bear or a diamond ring that symbolizes love? Furthermore, what if we were to approach every object according to its potential for narrative and meaning—the way that we give a toy to a child or a ring to a spouse? This would mean attending closely to the qualities of all our possessions. It would require us to make a place for each thing in our lives, treating it as singular, special, and significant. It might involve learning about where these objects come from, to follow the links of the commodity chain back as far as we can go. If we were to bring objects into our lives one by one, each time with genuine care, it would be better for us, better for society, better for the planet.
